793668 2009-07-21 08:35:00 Any Exchange experts hiding here!!

Have just setup Exchange 2007 on Server 2008. All working fine except 1 thing SSL SMTP. Have a ssl cert from Godaddy.

Have one user that accesses via SSL POP. Can POP OK but can't send offsite. SMTP Port is set at the default 587.

I have tested onsite and can send OK.

Firewall is set for port 587 in and out. No logs showing it being blocked.

Wondering now if my ISP is blocking this port.

I'm with Xnet here and client on Xtra. Anyone know if the port could be blocked.

793669 2009-07-21 08:39:00 So the user is trying to send from an Xnet account, and theyre on Xtra?? Dont think its going to happen / work Speedy Gonzales (78)
793670 2009-07-21 08:50:00 Should work via port 587.

In fact I think I have just found the problem. Looks like the router isn't set for DMZ to the firewall and is using port forwarding. Will login and check the router, I bet port 587 not open, in which case it must have never worked!!

793671 2009-07-21 08:52:00 What email client is the user using? Who is the ISP for that user? ronyville (10611)
793672 2009-07-21 08:55:00 Am I just stupider than usual, but I would have thought any businesses that purchased Exchange would have support from Microsoft? the_bogan (9949)

Just a thought, if you are using POP to download emails than you will need to set the smtp settings on the email clients itself. Just like configuring MS outlook when using POP. Since you said that the user is not directly connected to the exchange server. If the user was connected to the exchange server directly than the exchange server does the sending on behave of the email client. Also do you have a spam/antivirus server like (e.g mailmarshal) for your exchange. If you do and you are routing your outgoing emails through mailmarshal as well than you will need to setup the routing option on the exchange to point to the mailmarshal as well. Hope this helps in some way.

793674 2009-07-21 10:49:00 Bogan - As I said in my second post I think I have sorted the issue but if I hadn't it's not a Microsoft problem. Remote SSL POP is working, not remote SMTP. Onsite SMTP is working. Has to be a firewall/router or ISP issue (OK my post title a bit misleading).
Any you ever tried to talk to their Techs, this job is a mixed OS enviroment Mac and PC using Outlook 2003, Entourage, OWA and SSL POP. I know what their response would be. Google is your friend!!

Ronyville as above I believe it is a router port forwarding issue. All Spam filtering done within Exchange using MS Anti Spam etc. Works not bad I must say. Client is setup correctly.

Cheers

x2, good to see m not the only one. I have around 120 users with the same mixture. Its fun at times configuring all of them to connect to our email servers and file shares on our data severs, but it also can be really annoying at times when things dont work out.. :groan:

I have a word document at work that has information on exchange 07 setup, PM me if you are interested and I can email it to you. As long as I can find it.
