It might be rare but a friend had almost every appliance in his house fried in a lightening storm. Everything that was plugged in at the time. I still have his old modem here somewhere, it is just molten inside.

Happened to me - Where a lighting bolt shattered one of those circular glass discs on top of the power line outside our previous flat (Old overhead power lines in Otara, Auckland). Only had the PC on, but it ruined the tv tuner card and dial up modem. So upgraded to a more expensive protection power unit...

Limits would vary by insurance companies and the policy that is taken out, excesses usually apply also.

You are asking "how long is a piece of string", you need to read the policy.

649609 2008-03-18 03:53:00 For some odd reason our rural property power pole gets regularly zapped by lightning strkes. They don't even have to be local. The last time it happened it just went flash bang, directly overhead.
The lineman found the pole fuse from the transfomer on the ground and reckoned the transformer was early 1960's or thereabouts. The transformer fuse was completely melted and the lineman was of the opinion had it not spat the dummy completely, every electrical item in the house would have been stuffed, and all the wiring. It appears from what I was told that the current will even track behind any mirrors in the house. Pretty scary. Oddly enough we are the only house in the street still with this odd transformer, all the rest have a different type completely. Contact your lines company you might say? They will do nothing so long as it's still hanging on to that pole!
