| 652117 | 2008-03-23 21:07:00 | Hi Guys I am with Vodaphone prepay and am thinking about moving to a contract plan. It looks like I will have to get a new simm card and new phone number ! This would be a real pain. Is this true ? I would have though that with the new number portability rules this would no longer be necessary ! Regards Digby |

Is it true that if you want to have a mobile purely for emergencies, Vodaphone prepay now makes you pay $20 every 3 months, instead of once a year? Actually that is now a trick they are paying, as by default they setup a prepay mobile sim card on the 3 month plan. However you can change it to the 12 month plan, which I think is what they call motormouth. They do also charge about $1.40 a minute to call a non vodafone mobile on this plan, so beware. I actually read that telecoms new network, they may have the exclusive contract to sell the iphone, as it is compatible with their new 3G network. Once this is setup, and they sign up a few resellers, we may actually get proper competition, as currently vodafone have a monopoly on the GSM technology, so can charge what they want. The good thing about telecom is that you can change between a prepay and contract without changing the number. Also I think that vodafone do have to allow for prepay numbers to be portable eventually. |

| 652121 | 2008-03-24 03:13:00 | The problem is that pre-paid Vodafone numbers are 10-11 digits long while plan/contract numbers are 8-9 digits. So you couldn't keep the same number when changing between pre-paid and plan. Why they cant just call divert, I don't know. |

I know people on plans with 10-11 digit numbers. You will have no problem going from vodafone prepay to a telecom plan |

If you got on a plan before mid-2007, you should have a 8-9 digit number. |

That used to be the case, however I think they have been forced by the new laws, to make both prepaid and onaccount numbers portable, and between networks. I think it is however currently being worked on in some situations, due to v's old technology and systems. |

I'm a little confused by the wording etc that Vodafone uses on its site. I'm on Motormouth and pay 49c/minute to other Vodafones, and I think to landlines. The minimum top up is $20 every year. The Vodafone site lists another plan (which I've forgotten the name of) which costs 89c/minute and requires a top up every 3 months, yet claims that it's cheaper. |
