650441 2008-03-18 06:49:00 Hi guys,

I want to be able to host a website that uses ASP.NET 2.0. Now is it possible to host such a website on any webhost or do I need one that specializes in such websites?

The website itself is simple using HTML, CSS and connects to a SQL Server database. So are there any good webhosts out there that you can recommend for such a website and would you know the approximate cost?

Thanks a lot :)

650442 2008-03-18 07:53:00 To use .Net you will need a Windows based host. Most hosts run Linux. As I use PHP rather than ASP, I've never needed a Windows based host so can't personally offer any recommendations. Typically you will pay slightly more than a Linux based host. maccrazy (6741)

You will need one that does windows hosting. Many don't mention whether they are windows or linux, and in that case you would assume they are linux, which is cheaper and easier for the host to provide.
You would pay around $30 per month for a NZ based window host using NZ servers with MySQL and heaps of diskspace, and maybe it will cost more if you want to use a MSSQL Server. I would recommend choosing one that has been round for a good number of years (at least 3), as new webhosts offering really low prices seem to popup everyday, but they don't tend to be reliable or have responsive support, and many just disappear overnight.

Thanks for your replies everyone. I have contacted Dannz about this. I guess the big question is, how do I know which webhosts are reliable and have been around for a reasonable amount of time?

Turns out, it is pretty hard to find out because no one seems to need ASP.NET hosting. Who do all of you use, so I could contact them and ask about Windows hosting.

Thanks again :)

I shouldn't worry about a host's reliability or whatever at this stage. I'd just take one who offers a reasonable price, and so long as you can pay monthly, and without any contracts, if you find they're unreliable it's a simple enough thing to find someone else and transfer the site.

Openhost is now owned operated by Webdrive, but I don't think it has the same reliability as webdrive clustered servers .

Changing hosting provider, once you have got it setup (eg . email/databases etc), is a pain in the are . I would recommend not going for the cheapest, and also going for one that has been around for a number of years (check the copyright notice at the bottom of the website, or read the 'about us' page to se how long they have been operating)
