795231 2009-07-26 03:23:00 I have an old pc to pass on to family. I want to format the hard drive but the old internal CD drive is broken. I have replaced it with an external DVD writer (with software loaded) and want to format the hard drive from this. How do I do this as I am wonder whether in formatting whether the process will delete all drivers etc related to the DVD writer.

I have all software and disks for formatting and plug-ins.

795232 2009-07-26 03:35:00 If you format the hdd it will format the hdd and will remove everything inc the drivers. So, before you format it, depending on what kind of system its going into, find out what the brand/model of the system is, then download the drivers first. You wont be able to do it online later (if the LAN drivers arent installed).

If youre going to install XP on it. And if the external dvd needs drivers, download the drivers to something else first as well. You only need the external dvd (if youre going to format / do a clean install of windows on the hdd). You dont need it if all you want to do is format the hdd. Connect the hdd to a working PC first, (if its IDE, remember to jumper it properly), then format it

Your Extertal DVD will work fine. Just boot anything from it and format!
