794900 2009-07-24 09:34:00 I'm thinking of buying myself a domain name, partly for my one-man-band business email (although don't know how much longer the business will run) and also to give me a permanent personal email address. I don't think the creation of a web page will be involved.

My ISP for broadband these days is Xtra, but I still maintain an email address with Paradise, for $130 a year - should give that one up really. Requires me to dial-up to send from it!

Done some research, but wonder what is the best procedure? Do I buy a domain name from Xtra, and register it with them, and they host it? I gather from someone there that hosting it, with two email addresses will cost me about $6/month for the email, and about $45/year for the hosting. Have I got that right?

I would appreciate comments, thanks.

794901 2009-07-24 09:41:00 Depending on the nature of your emails, it may be worth considering using Google Apps to host your email (for free). You can register your domain with just about anyone - a .co.nz domain should cost somewhere between $20 - $40 and simply point it at whoever is hosting your email for you. From what I've heard, Xtra charges an arm and a leg for domain names. somebody (208)
794902 2009-07-24 10:21:00 Thanks, somebody. Xtra charge $40 + GST/year for hosting, I think.

I'll have a look at Google Apps too. When you say "nature of the emails", is that referring to limits on attachment size?

More to do with confidentiality, privacy, and data-export issues. Since Google's servers are in the US, you may wish to consider whether you want your emails being stored over there.
