651419 2008-03-22 02:10:00 Yeah, it's pretty underhanded stuff on Apple's part. People can say "it's optional, get over it" but really, a ticked by default "update" doesn't sound like the right way to go about distributing software, it's basically unrequested bundled software. They should have at least put Safari as an update but not ticked by default. A good write-up on the issue is over here (john.jubjubs.net).

I also have no bias against Apple's software either, I use both iTunes and Safari almost daily as I own an iPod touch and use Safari for browser/platform testing in a web development capacity.

Thats like any software on windows, you have to untick the option for short cuts and to startup.

Do you find it's getting a bit bloated and laggy? Not a problem (yet), hopefully 3 is a bit lighter.

Exactly. I don't know about you but of the many plain regular people I know that use computers, the evidence of superfluous software shortcuts on their desktop and in the Start menu for programs they might have used only a few time ages ago shows why this is an underhanded tactic.

Apple knows the general population of PC users are none the wiser to what the hell Safari is anyway, and are basically taking advantage of this to pedal their software.

Just because it's how installation of shortcuts etc "usually works" (in of itself not a very good comparison I must say), Apple of all people should know that making this process as user-friendly and honest as possible is the right way to do things.

Too true, Microsoft would NEVER considering forcing you to take an IE 8.0 update to "improve" your web browsing experience...... (tui)

MS din't FORCE IE8 on users. Hell, I went and got it myself but all my other computers are running IE7 very happily without MS recommending updating it.

Possibly a bit bloated if anything.

Maybe they didn't force YOU beeswax (because you know everything) but they certainly forced 90% of unsuspecting members of the tech illiterate public to "upgrade" without giving them a "choice".

IE8 is still in beta, and theres no way that MS are forcing it on us - yet. You have to go out of your way to find it.

That would be IE7 then.
