| 652573 | 2008-03-25 07:09:00 | It's the principle of the thing. If we're going to jump up and down about Myanmar, Fiji, Zimbabwe, and what not, then we MUST also condemn the actions in China. When news broke about monks being arrested in Myanmar, the govt and the media was quick to slam the rulers of Myanmar. Yet when China does the same in Tibet, we keep quiet while Helen Clark "finds out the facts". If NZ had enough balls to stand up to the world's largest superpower, the US, during the Iraq war, then why can't we do something as simple as this? A boycott of the Olympics sends a stronger message than ever, that NZers stand for human rights. |

| 652575 | 2008-03-25 09:32:00 | Yes and no. Yes: (obvious reasons) No: Don't blame the majority of the population who still can't afford a transmittable medium to even notice the games or the atrocities. Any bad news is locked so diddly gets out. China is still third world in many areas. They wouldn't give a crap cos they can't give a crap. Not only that, but it makes me look like part of the guilty party. bob_doe_nz loves and hates the Chinese government, just as much as he loves and hates himself Now where is the option for both YES and NO |

| 652577 | 2008-03-25 10:05:00 | Excellent point DeaneF. Boycotts don't work on a country that cares, forget one that doesn't. Cuba boycotted for nearly 52 years now, din't do anything. Iran boycotted for almost 4 years now, din't do anything AND we still buy their oil. Zimbabwe boycotted for 5 years, din't do anything. While I don't condone what China is doing, we or for that matter any country cannot do anything to change their stance or actions. As an aside, a boycott of 4 million consumers would hurt China a LOT more than a boycott of 100-200 athletes, most of whom aren't even going to win anything. |

Some countries boycotted the Montreal commonwealth games because NZ had sporting contacts with South Africa and yet one of those boycotting countries sent a boxing team to SA two weeks later. |

Many African nations boycotted the Montreal Olympic Games in 1976 - but hey! John Walker got famous for winning the 1500m there! 62 Countries boycotted the Moscow Olympics in 1980 - but the Soviets didn't withdraw from Afghanistan until 1989 so it would be a stretch to say that the Olympic boycott made a difference there. |

| 652581 | 2008-03-26 04:21:00 | Quite a few of you blokes are suffering from a highly contagious virus called cardiosanguiniensis cunctatus optatus or selective, delayed onset, bleeding of the heart (see Joe Bennett's column, The Press 26-Mar-2008 - not on www yet). Joe describes one of the worst symptoms of this virus as hypocrisy. This allows you to suggest a boycott of the Olympics, thereby ruining some athletes' careers, while at the same time being quite happy to buy cheap Chinese produce from Bunnings, Warehouse, etc. |
