652349 2008-03-24 19:18:00 Some old threads are still interesting.
Some still have valid information.

Others can be fun.
(It's a mark of seniority here to know "what's wrong wiv my fridge?" without explanation...)

But there aren't THAT many turning up.
And you don't HAVE to read them.

I say leave them alone.

The voice of reason and common sense which is lacking here frequently these days.

Why these type of polls are even raised escapes me, they are a complete waste of time, very few people bother to vote and 20 or so votes out of a total membership of 14900 means absolutely nothing.

652350 2008-03-24 19:27:00 I'd say a month - in the help forum. 6 months in the chat forum.

It's not so much a pain, but it can get annoying, and could affect peoples ability to get help quickly.

And if older threads get locked, n00bs who are googling and find an answer to their problem are gonna start a new thread, rather than piggyback on a 5 or 10 year old thread (which has happened several times in the last few months).

It will also stop spammers dredging older threads up too.

I'm all for it, I think it would make PF1 a much more pleasant place to be.

:thanks Bletch.

652352 2008-03-24 20:06:00 I can't say it's a massive problem with old threads being brought back to life. If it's a spammer we delete the post and the thread goes back into oblivion.

I can't see us changing the way we treat threads around here, PF1 is somewhat renowned for the posterity of it's posts (pun intended).

And you don't HAVE to read them.Sadly, I do - as far as I'm aware there is no way to tell whether or not a thread is ancient without first opening it.

If the thread was started before about June 2002 (I think) you will not see the username under the thread title.

652355 2008-03-24 20:27:00 I would prefer some sort of warning, as some sites have that tells you when you press the reply button, it says something like, you are responding to a thread that is 6 months old.

I don't think locking old threads is the answer as i know that if I have a problem I will often work through the solutions given in an old thread, then post a reply saying I have tried all the solutions given and am still having the problem, as it beats the heck out of having to explain all the steps you have taken and there is often not a newer thread about the problem

Not really - example...

I am having the problem described in this (pressf1.co.nz) thread, I have tried all the solution provided there, but am still having no luck. Anyone have any more ideas?

TIA.
