651410 2008-03-21 20:43:00 In an apparent bid to rapidly gain share of the online browser market dominated by rival Microsoft, Apple is leveraging its vast iTunes install base to recommend that Windows users also download and install the latest version of its Safari web browser.

Safari Time!!! (www.appleinsider.com ml)

Wow, desperate times call for desperate measures huh? Since even Mac owners hardly use Safari, they HAVE to appeal to Windows owners.

Quite the opposite, most Mac users use Safari.
Safari is the number 3 browser with over 5% market share compared with Firefox which has about 15%

Apple isn’t kidding when it says that Safari 3.1 is fast.* In my SunSpider JavaScript benchmark it is only narrowly beaten by Firefox 3.0 Beta 4.*

Apple are bad for making you download software you don't want. At least MS doesn't enforce unwanted software on you:rolleyes:

651413 2008-03-21 21:25:00 Doesn't iTunes also install Bonjour on every machine as well? (snip..)

Well, I am puzzled. I have iTunes installed on 3 computers and it has never installed Bonjour on any of them. I guess I have had iTunes for three or four years. Was it an option that I missed?

I haven't received the Safari "invitation" yet either.

I wonder if I should change my brand of deodorant?

It said for both - I googled it for Windows.

651415 2008-03-22 01:51:00 Yeah, it's pretty underhanded stuff on Apple's part. People can say "it's optional, get over it" but really, a ticked by default "update" doesn't sound like the right way to go about distributing software, it's basically unrequested bundled software. They should have at least put Safari as an update but not ticked by default. A good write-up on the issue is over here (john.jubjubs.net).

I also have no bias against Apple's software either, I use both iTunes and Safari almost daily as I own an iPod touch and use Safari for browser/platform testing in a web development capacity.

Well its not that program, as it says on the site u posted

Safari AdBlock works with Safari 3 and runs on Leopard (not Tiger and Windows).

And the only download at sourceforge if u didnt notice is for OS X 10.5

I dunno about that, don't give M$ too much credit!

Although I would say Apple Software Update is as bad as anything else out there.

Too true, Microsoft would NEVER considering forcing you to take an IE 8.0 update to "improve" your web browsing experience...... (tui)
