| 650766 | 2008-03-22 18:36:00 | I've thought about doing my PPL. But what would I do with it? Even if I went flying every second weekend for an hour it would be like buying a minor appliance for the house every two weeks. I'm just not rich enough. | Deane F (8204) | ||

| 650768 | 2008-03-23 02:03:00 | The cost of flying these days rules it right out as a casual hobby. My honest advice to anyone contemlpating taking lessons. If, like most of us, money is short, forget about it.... If you do not intend to make a career of flying, forget about it. If you are keen to fly why not just buy MS Flight Sim X. It is the only thing I can fly these days and I love it. If you want to make a career of it. The FIRST thing to do is do a commercial medical. Forget about the student one. It could save you a lot of money. I know of three people who failed commercil medicals after getting their PPL's. Good friend of mine, an A cat instructor, finished his career with a ppl. One of very few A Cat's with just a ppl. But if the flying bug has realy got you. Good luck and happy flying. |

I did do a class 1 medical (for the CPL) which I thought of before. I did all the tests and passed them except the eye test which I had not done the test yet. Did the chest xray and the ear test and other bits with the aviation GP before I reverted back to class 2. Hey .. if you are an instructor with a PPL - don't you need a CPL to charge for your services? Out of interest, those little aeroplanes like those from AirNZ from Blenheim to Christchurch - do they fly above the clouds, are they in a pressurised cabin? I dunno my interest of aviation has been on the ground level - I like airports and aeroplanes, the mini community of airports, all those ground services filling up and emptying it ... Part time w'end tutoring might be fun tho. Yep, flight sim, that makes me look at the instruments a bit more. The Piper's are pretty primitive in terms of modern avionics - I thought we would get autopilot and auto air speed and altitude leveler and a rotation GPS unit :D |

Without a cpl you can not charge for your services. So instruction must be uncharged. Don't worry about instruments at this stage. VFR means VISUAL. You fly by outside references. Wait till you start commercial and IR training before you worry about them. |

| 650771 | 2008-03-23 04:20:00 | Hey Jack, if it means uncharged. Does the student pay nothing or does the student pay all the cost and the instructor is just up there without pay? If so that can be interesting .. | Nomad (952) | ||
