651652 2008-03-22 20:31:00 Yesterday I was watching the cricket on sky satellite and wondered by what route the signal goes to reach me. I live about 1km from Mclean Park where the England versus NZ test is being played, so dose the signal go from Mclean Park to the satellite, back down to Sky in Auckland then back up to the satellite then down to my place or something differant. Just curious.

651653 2008-03-22 21:34:00 Probably right.... My brother in law from Canada is here on holiday and has just retired from the industry over there.

He says it takes 2.5 (approx) seconds for the round trip for the signal to do the round trip. Evidence of this can be found by having one TV on ordinary VHS set to TV1 and another on Sky set on TV1. You will notice the time delay by this method.

The more I think of this, I realise he is right. We tried in the past to listen to the radio commentary of a Super 14 match while watching it on SkyTV (To avoid having to listen to Murray Mexted!!) The time lag is quite noticeable!

It goes via microwave link (34mbits digital) to MT Erin from there it goes via Kordia to Sky In Auckland. Sky then feed it into their system and uplink it to Optus D1 on Sky sport.

But there is also a Satellite backup feed beamng to USA on Intelsat 701 Cband.
