| 795318 | 2009-07-26 06:29:00 | Hi, One of my laptops died suddenly,due to a power surge,and I was hoping to get some stuff off of the hdd if posssible,I was wondering what would be the best way? I have taken the drive out and was looking at this ...www.trademe.co.nz would this do the job?, Thanks Hook |

| 795321 | 2009-07-26 07:41:00 | Sometimes the USB ones dont work at all - where as something like an adaptor to slave the drive to your normal PC does. One like This here (www.ascent.co.nz) from Ascent. Unless the Drive is a SATA - then simply plug it into a spare SATA port on PC using a spare sata cable.. Given up on the USB ones - to many problems. |

The problems I have had is while the Adapter is recognized, (you hear the plink plonk of the USB connection when you plug it in) The drive its self simply wont show. Tried it on several PC's, different USB ports, Different drives, 3 different Adapters. keeping in Mind I'm talking about damaged drives - not ones that are working perfectly. Usually if I plug it into the one I linked previously, it will show, or actually stop the drive from booting. As we know damaged drives can stop a PC booting. Once it finally boots ( assuming it does) if windows cant see the files, then I use Linux to try and recover. Or ERD Commander. Even trying with a Linux CD, the USB one doesn't show. |

| 795325 | 2009-07-26 21:41:00 | Thanks all. The laptop itself is dead,it just won't fire up. I tested the ram sticks in another laptop,and they are working,so am able to keep them to use again.I needed something to check the hdd and see if it is still servicable and recover some data.Its a 200gb drive and I'm reluctant to toss it in the bin until I'm positive thats where it should be.The laptop itself is only 7 weeks old,so worth a shot.
