| 653242 | 2008-03-27 08:37:00 | Ah, I haven't had a tiki tour of that graveyard, but have done the one up at Hamiltons behind Waipiata. There was a lot of gold mining in that area. Not sure about Naseby, but I think there are gold workings there, as well as at St Bathans - all of those settlements are pretty close together really. I should think Ah Fat would have been one of the Chinese miners who was unfortunate enough not to have his bones taken back to China, but he could have been a merchant too. If none of the PressF1 stalwarts can give you a translation, there may be something about him in one of the large books written by Dr James Ng. There are 5 of his books in the ChCh library. From memory there is a series of 3 books that cover pretty much all there is to know about the early Chinese in Otago. I think he got quite a bit of information from the records of Rev Alexander Don, who recorded a lot of information from his time with the Chinese miners and other Chinese communities. That gravestone is in really good nick, isn't it? Good luck with your quest. |
