795903 2009-07-28 06:38:00 I'm looking for advice on what people think is the best free download manager to work with Firefox. In the past I used Flashget in conjunction with Flashgot but when I uninstalled it the download bit speed actually went up a little bit. Any opinions either for (with reasons why you prefer it) or against (including pitfalls) would be gratefully appreciated. I'm using Vista Home Premium with Telstra Clear's basic PDQ broadband package.

Thanks

795904 2009-07-28 06:41:00 Personally I use Freedownloadmanager (http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/) No pun intended from the Post title either :p wainuitech (129)

Integrates well with firefox.
addons.mozilla.org

Otherwise try Orbit Downloader.

795908 2009-07-28 10:18:00 I use FDM (http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/) too, although I don't find it ideal. I've never used DownThemAll and don't use Firefox anymore but I hear good things about it. sal (67)
795909 2009-07-31 02:34:00 Thanks for the feedback people. At the moment I',m trying Internet Download Manager because of an entry in NetGuide's July edition of 101 Absolutely Free Downloads - turns out it's a 30 day trial. Downloading Serif Photoplus 9 (47.27 MB) from Netguide's August edition took 26 min 46 secs at an estimated speed of 32 kb/sec. As mentioned in an earlier post when I had uninstalled Flashgot and Flashget my download speed with Firefox's own DLM was in the high 30s and sometimes got over 40. So I'll see how IDM goes on a couple of other things, then uninstall it (it did seem to integrate with Firefox with no probs, install DownThemAll and see how that goes with the Serif stuff.

On a technical note when I was using Flashget there seemed to be 5 or 6 "streams" (is that the tech term?) happening at the same time. If the download speed was, say 36, does that mean that the TOTAL download data volume was coming in at that speed or was each seperate stream coming in at that speed thus making it 5 or 6 times faster?

Any further technical explanations would be interesting,

Thanks again

795910 2009-07-31 14:52:00 those are some very low speeds. Mirddes (10)
795911 2009-07-31 22:23:00 Leechget (www.leechget.net) was one I used with IE,which had a colourful/informative interface and had numerous options. I think a plug in is required for Firefox... kahawai chaser (3545)
