795411 2009-07-26 21:35:00 I have a Dick Smith pc from about 5 years ago and the owner does not know the administrator password or a password to any account with administrative rights. Does anyone know if DSE used a generic password when installing XP? ruatuki (12890)
795412 2009-07-26 22:09:00 I assume you have tried all the standard ones , admin, Administrator, password. Have you tried dse ?? Tried Phoning them ??

There is software available to change the password without actually knowing it.

You can try NT password Recovery (home.eunet.no) - there is better about but not allowed to post here in the forum (rules)

795413 2009-07-26 23:16:00 Download this:
www.piotrbania.com

Burn the iso file to a CD. Use ImgBurn if you don't have an iso burning tool:
www.imgburn.com

Boot from it, then at the login screen just hit enter, don't need to type anything.

You'll be in, then from there make a new administrator account

795414 2009-07-27 02:24:00 Thanks for the help.
Yes did try the usual and no password but no luck. Just thought there might be an easy solution before using NT password editor.
Will try the alternative solution suggested by blam6.

Interested in the comment "there are better solutions but can't post because of rules". Why can you suggest NT Offline password editor but not another tool?
Just curious.
My use is lawful.

My use is lawful. because there is a Bootable CD that has a password recovery / deletion tool that would bypass any password in a matter of seconds.

BUT because some of the programs ( even though they are older versions) that are on this CD are considered pirated by the Mods (originals are paid versions) then the forum rules clearly state no linking or help with pirated software.

795416 2009-07-27 03:16:00 Try using OPH Crack

Downlaod from

http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net/

795417 2009-07-27 05:59:00 Try using OPH Crack

Downlaod from

ophcrack.sourceforge.net

Even though ophcrack is good, the user does not need to find out/crack the password, she/he just needs to be able to login!

Cracking takes a long time, and the rainbow tables are a big download.

I've also found that for non alphanumeric passwords its take a *very* long time..

795418 2009-08-02 20:46:00 Thank you to all for your help.
Just to let you know, I got back to the school (which had 14 PCs where no passwords were known, a common situation) and used NT Offline Password editor. I could not reset the administrator password to blank as it said it already was blank (but could not log in with blank password) so I used the 'promote' function to upgrade a limited account to administrator and then changed passwords using this account. Worked on all 14 machines without a problem.
Thanks again for the help.
