795394 2009-07-26 11:43:00 Hey ya guys

Just wondering, if I place 2MB L2 Cache CPU into a motherboard with only 1MB L2 cache support, would that cpu go? Obviously assuming the FSB is compatible. I ask this for the reason that RAM speed can be reduce to match the motherboard maximum ram support speed, but unsure of if CPU's L2 cache can be the same.

Many thanks

The motherboard either supports the CPU or it doesn't, the amount of cache on-die is irrelevant. Most motherboard manufacturers will have a list of supported CPUs and the required BIOS revision on their website.

The board that Im looking at, Asus P5GD1 Pro, it really has a lack of info on its CPU support. I know it supports 775 cpu with a max of 800FSB and some where in its manual it mentioned it supports 1MB L2 Cache. Other than those info nothing else is mentioned on the CPU. Currently Im thinking of purchasing this board and getting a E5200 (800FSB, 775) but this has a 2MB L2 cache.

795398 2009-07-26 22:23:00 There's a few CPU's here that have 2 mb L2 cache. (support.asus.com)

Probably be a good idea to ask before you buy the mobo. If the shop's wrong take it back. Get the CPU installed at the shop / and get them to test it before you take it home

Check the list of compatible CPUs on the Asus site.

It either supports it or doesn't

795400 2009-07-27 00:18:00 It does not support any Core2 or later series CPUs. It is specifically a P4 board. It's a very old board, only DDR400 support, I915 chipset etc. inphinity (7274)
795401 2009-07-27 07:44:00 Well the board is off TM, so info from the seller could be unreliable (but will be worth the ask). Was thinking of purchasing this board so I can use my old DDR400, but considering how cheap dirt cheap DDR2 rams are...Im sort of re-thinking this purchase. Though my main reason for wanting this board is for the PCI-Express gfx slot. CCF (6760)
795402 2009-07-27 07:47:00 Well if the mobo takes DDR 400, there's no point in getting DDR2, it wont fit Speedy Gonzales (78)
795403 2009-07-27 08:38:00 For the chipset drivers for a I915 board go here (support.packardbell.com) they are a pain to track down as the site is in German but they are on there gary67 (56)
