653945 2008-03-30 08:44:00 I think you mean methane, robbyp, not carbon dioxide. CO2 is a colourless, odourless gas. Unlike cow farts.

They produce both CO2 and CH4. Methane is still a major greenhouse gas. Burning Methane does also produce CO2.

This may be true (my school chemistry memories are a bit vague), but I've never seen a cow light its own farts... :banana

Maybe that could solve NZs power problems, hook up these cows to a methane power plant.

Yes. But burning methane and turning it into CO2 is much better for the environment, than methane on its own.

In terms of "equivalent" impact on global warming, methane is several times worse than CO2 (I think 4x, but I can't remember the actual number). There are a number of other gases which are even worse.

IF we could somehow capture that methane, and burn it, we achieve two things:
1) better for the environment, as CO2 is less harmful than CH4
2) get some energy out of it which is usable

I fart from time to time as well. I would think that Helen Clark does this as well but I do not know this for certain.

BTW I do not apply a lighter to my anus either. Excuse me for breathing as I breathe in a combination of oxygen and nitrogen and exhale CO2.

Maybe that is what this government innovation grant could be used for, inventing something that could be attached to the side of cows to capture methane. It could solve a number of problems.

In the event you ever get to Tirau you would find an Ethanol and Methane producer. This is a Fonterra plant.

The next thing is whom will convert their vehicles to run on these fuels?

Some people have a steam powered computer I am told.

So I take it that you do not drive a car which emits CO2.

A number of people use vehicles for suicide by inhaling CO2 by using an in pipe from the out pipe as it were. Others may use vehicles to suicide in other ways like not keeping left whilst driving.

Back to the price of milk.

What is the price of fish in the rhubarb season?

I note that Digby has not been back on this thread for some reason known only to Him/Her self.

653953 2008-03-30 10:26:00 That depends on what you call "specials," kahawai chaser.
I've noticed a wide variety of milk prices at the supermarket - not just between the fancy/supplemented/flavoured varieties, as you'd expect, but on basic milk with different brand names.
They may not change weekly, but are worth a look.
(That's no help if you buy at the dairy with one brand & a higher markup, of course)

I've no time right now to check my dockets, but I chose basic Pams milk at New World the other day because it was cheaper than Meadowlea or Meadowfresh or whatever.
"Own brands" are like permanent specials.

And I'll bet most of them came from the same treatment plant...

And has any person noticed the tankers full of sulphuric acid at Fonterra Plants? This to make cheese and curdle the milk.

653954 2008-03-30 17:45:00 If Fonterra were to sell to one customer (us) for less than all the others (o'seas), they would be failing to get the best result for their suppliers, and rapidly would get a gumboot encrusted sedentary zone. Why should they sell to the lowest bidder?

Why sell to the lowest bidder i.e. the NZ customer?
For all the free water the get out of the environment and the kowtowing regional councils who let them away with it.
