654121 2008-03-31 03:30:00 Adam and Eve I was told at Sunday school!.

www.oxfordancestors.com

As I have my family tree back 7 generations, I think I will get the kit sent over for free.

Apparently there are only 7 definite DNA groups in England's original races, but I cannot give the website for that, as I did not think much of it at the time.

654122 2008-03-31 04:15:00 Er. No.

The origin of the Hungarian language is one of the several mysteries that surround the early history of the Magyars. For long it has been believed that Hungarian belongs to the Ugric branch of the Uralic language family based on a relatively large number of words (~300-400) of Finno-Ugric origin in the language. Others try to relate Hungarian to Sumerian, a language that was spoken in the Middle-East some nine thousand years ago. These ideas have been rejected by scientists for several reasons.

The Hungarians, or Magyars, come originally from Asia, though precisely where has never been established. They appeared in the area north of the Black Sea around the 8th/9th century at which time they were nomadic tribal horsemen.

Thats it.
Can we assume that you get the urge to wander off on a horse occasionally?

654128 2008-04-01 20:58:00 There are three very readable books if anyone wants to follow up on the research on mitochondrial DNA, all written by Brian Sykes of Oxford University .

He started a significant part of his research whilst he was a patient in Rarotonga Hospital recovering from a (?motorcycle accident?) . He researched blood samples in the hospital, and followed that up when he got back to Britain with other Polynesian research . His research is one of the main threads that trace the origin of Maori and other Polynesian peoples back to Taiwan (others include language development, oral histories etc) .

Anyway, the three books are:
Seven Daughters of Eve (Traces mDNA back to seven daughters of one African mother) .

Adam's Curse (Looks at the Y chromosome and predicts its demise - a bit scary for male readers . )

Blood of the Isles (Traces DNA tests around Britain, and concludes that a surprising proportion of people in Britain are mainly Celtic in origin - even in England - confounding all those people who reckon they are Anglo Saxon - other interesting stuff as well, like Neanderthals in Wales!) .

The latter book is at . bloodoftheisles . net/index . html" target="_blank">www . bloodoftheisles . net This also includes a link to the Oxford Genetic Atlas Project .

654129 2008-04-01 21:18:00 For those of you that think we all came from Africa, wait for the National Geographic study to end. Have patience... Plus be aware of the "copy cat web sites" that will tell you anything for a nickel.

Hmmmm. I think I will trust Brian Sykes and the Oxford Genetic Atlas Project thanks. They have been working on this for years, and Nat Geo are Johnny Come Lately by comparison. Judging by the junk the Nat Geo puts on its Sky TV channel, their credibility has deteriorated! Whatever, I would trust Oxford University over any profit-oriented media source any day on any topic.

BTW, what is the problem with coming from Africa?
