653816 2008-03-31 19:57:00 The lost interest of the capital outlay vs the future rising costs of electricity became the issue.

the other factor is "advailabilty of supply". factor in the days/weeks of no power can make a big difference.

These solar companies have put their prices up a lot over the last few years, making the subsidy a bit of a joke. I think at the moment you only get about $500, which is a very small percentage, compared to the cost of setting it up.

653820 2008-04-01 02:25:00 If we were all to install them, what percentage would we save (electricity)1% 5% or what. Cicero (40)

The average use of electricity for waterheating in the domestic sector in the South Island is ~40%

I know of a new house that manages OK on the glass transfer tube system all year, as long as there is only the two occupants. Power is needed to suppliment when the family stays.

However a second panel would fix that.

I think the installers are currently creaming it. They are actually a lot more expensive now than they were 10 years ago, despite the fact that a lot more people are installing them, even taking into account inflation.

653823 2008-04-01 03:27:00 It would seem therfore to make economic sense to, via a subsidy install all of NZ over a period with said units.
If one were to save 20% of national capacity ,this would save a power station or two.

Quite right Murr,if we were allowed to keep the tax in the first place,it would be better.
In view of that is how game is played, gov takes dosh then doles out as they see fit.
Saving 2 power stations adds up for me.

There would have to be some forensic auditing, keep people honest, unfortunately we tend to get greedy when chance arises.
