653213 2008-03-27 20:42:00 Hows Mcdonalds in Motueka. ???

  Now theres a story. I personally don't care weather it comes or not as I'm not a big fan of McD's, and it would encourage me to go there for lunch... :( But some people are getting all up in arms about it.

A group of people planted fruit and veges where the site earmarked for McD's is.

When the warehouse came a few years back, everyone did the same thing. Again, I don't care, as I don't (normally) go to the warehouse either, cause they sell crap. I think the general worry was that it would kill the smaller shops in high street. As far as I'm aware, not a single shop closed their doors because of The Warehouse. If a shop has a good reputation, and sells good stuff, no matter who comes to town they aren't gonna go broke.

Same thing goes for the cafe's, bakery's etc in high street. There is no competition, as they are not making the same food, so if someone wants garbage, they are gonna go to McD's, or KFC (which has already been here for years with no worries.)

If they want good food, their gonna go to a bakery or cafe.

We have the population to support it easily, you should see KFC on a busy night. It's chronic!

Any growth is positive. Mot is becoming less and less 'holey' by the day.

Parties claim to be worried about, amongst other things, the appearance of the town to overseas visitors.....
The new McDonalds will be on the first corner of the town block, on the left.
Just before that corner is the most clapped out garage you can imagine. In series after the McDonalds' site are KFC, Warehouse, a car sales yard, a sevice station, a giant liquor store, the most hideous new concrete building you can imagine (the unemployment office), then a couple of frequently empty shops and then a couple of restaurant/cafes. Most of the first mentioned have parking space in front and so all the visitor really sees are locals cars.

653215 2008-03-27 22:13:00 Ahh yes, old Ian. Give him a 6 pack and an extra $20 and he'll give your car a WOF no matter what's wrong with it.

Where did you read that Scouse? Can't say I've heard that argument before. Very valid though, I hadn't thought if it before. When you drive that piece of road 5 or 10 times a day you kind of become immune to what it looks like. :p

653218 2008-03-27 23:20:00 Nah, that's where all the snobs live now. Rather affluent place it is too. Costs $5.50 for a latte.

Whenever anyone says "affluent" I always replace it with "effluent" in my head. It's amazing how often the sentence doesn't change that much.

Agreed - actually found it really hard to find a good espresso in and around Nelson . . . . The ignition coffee at Lambretta's is pretty good too .

TBH I tend to do that as well - when anyone says either word, the first thing I think of is Ponsonby!
