Same with my home PC - work PC is normally the opposite.

652919 2008-03-26 08:13:00 Ok - to go off on a slight tangent, of those Servers that are left on all the time, how often do you bounce them? Not counting OS updates that require a reboot . . . .

I've got a pSeries AIX server, a RedHat linux box, and two X-series 2003 boxes at work, and they all get re-booted from time-to-time .

Always an interesting discussion with IT folks about how often that 'time-to-time' should be!!

652924 2008-03-26 08:46:00 I put mine to sleep when not using it. I only turn it off when I go in holiday. vitalstatistix (9182)
652925 2008-03-26 09:01:00 Main two laptops usually get turned off unless they are downloading something, which is then set to turn off when completed.
The windows home server stays on 24x7 - No monitor/keyboard attached
The MediaPortal TV server stays on 24x7 - No monitor/keyboard attached either

Any customers machines that might need to run tests are usually left on overnight.

There's a smart one in every bunch!

I turn mine off at night. If not using it for a period of time in the day I usually turn off the monitor. I kid myself that it saves power but I sometimes wonder if it is worth it.

Nofam: I also remember dial up days when I used to arise at 0200, start a download and go back to bed! I used to get speeds up to 9 or 10kbps! What bliss!:sleep

Well it helps prevent monitor burn in (screensavers don't do their job these days)

And theoretically helps with the longevity of the monitor.
