796234 2009-07-29 14:35:00 Well i want to go far far in the world I already work as a computer tech. I have being working for 2 years. Wanna take to the next level but the thing is some people said that if i get a degree from a institution rather than a degree employers will look down on me i do not understand i mean i thought that a degree was a degree i hate uni i want to go to institute ballicker (15130)
796235 2009-07-29 19:45:00 definitely look at a polytechnic then, for what you are wanting but it might not be a degree you are after as even at polytech level a lot of the degrees are math and programming based and do a lot of software work, I looked a decided not to do a degree as I suck at programming just can't get my head around it gary67 (56)

When you say "take [it] to the next level" what do you mean exactly? What sort of job do you want to end up with? Do you want to become a network admin, DBA, system architect... ?

From what you've said in this thread so far, it sounds like you would be absolutely miserable if you went to a university to study an IT degree - since the computer science ones have high maths content, and others are highly theoretical with very little hands-on/practical work.

796237 2009-07-29 21:09:00 I have a Level 5 diploma in Information systems and technology (Open Polytechnic) I'm currently doing my MCSE, which will then be followed by CCNA.

I wouldn't do a degree but would look at industry standard quals such as CompTIA, A+, MCSE etc These will provide the underlying undertstanding of basic concepts/architecture whilst giving you industry standard qualifications.

There are heaps of options... just do some research and you'll find something to suit your learning needs and budget.

Cheers,

796238 2009-07-29 22:24:00 no man i already have a leve 5 diploma in computing i want a degree

Why? It's pointless.

Your next step should then be getting more work experience in the areas you are interested in which is far, far more important.
And then perhaps doing the MS exams and so on........

796240 2009-07-30 09:24:00 Writing in caps like that is considered "yelling" - that gets up "peoples wicks" - not a good idea when asking for advice.

Why not look at what the courses offer, speak to the people running the courses, then decide for yourself. No one can decide for you.

Theres "No Easy way" - if there were then there would be no point in getting a degree.

Edited: Also have a look at This thread (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) - many people here on the forum work in IT.

It's not a matter of whether you can or can't do it - as you say, if someone puts their mind to it, they can certainly achieve it. We are all just trying to help you - there is no need to shout at us.

The question here is whether you'll 1) enjoy it, and 2) gain anything from it. These are questions you need to ask yourself before throwing $40k, and 3 (or 4) years of your life at getting a piece of paper.

Just in case you have not realized but AUT and Auckland Uni and i am guessing Massey all provide Computer Science degrees which is basically more towards programming.. Why dont you go and do CCNA or MSCE, they will look much better on your CV. Or you could do this (www.unitec.ac.nz) and become a network or system admin which is also involves more practical work.

796243 2009-07-30 11:38:00 There are no shortcuts for mathematics. I'm currently doing a degree at UOA majoring in IS (Information Systems) and its pure theory though there are programing papers and programming projects and none of them have required me to use maths so far.

Of course if I did CompSci, I would need Mathematics etc so there you go...
