2008-04-02 05:24:00 | TV3 News today has reported that NZ First MP fears of too many Asians. Now, being Asian myself, I want to know what the average New Zealanders think of Asians in NZ in general. After having lived here for over 8 years, I have grown to embrace all races equally, though I do in some ways find things to complain about, even my own race, the Chinese. The thing I absolutely hate the most is how some Asians tend to scream and shout in public places in their own languages. I guess it applies to all foreign languages, but I hear Asians doing so mostly. Not only that, many Asians still decide to not integrate into NZ society and remain reclusive from other races and congregate with their own people and make little or no effort to befriend someone of another race.I find that extremely rude and arrogant. In general, all this applies to the young Asians - the generation which predominantly matters for the future. Older Asians, the fathers and mothers etc find it much harder to integrate due to language barriers and different social structures. I have to say I'm quite the opposite of the many young Asians who remain reclusive from other races. My friends diverse in race, from Italians to other Asians, from Hungarians to a couple of Brazillians (god they're rare) and of course, the genuine kiwis. And I take pride in having a diverse range of friends, as I believe mixing cultures will promote tolerance. It's just that it's so hard for people like me to avoid discrimination because there are still many Asians who refuse to venture from their own race. Now, I want to know what everybody else thinks of this subject. Please, this thread can turn volatile, so review your post before submitting if you have second thoughts.

2008-04-02 05:33:00 | I am an asian myself born in Hong kong .I immigrated to NZ in 1991 I don't have much trouble interacting with NZers or any other race. I tend to have more New Zealand born friends in NZ than asian ones. Not to be against auckland or anything but I find most of the trouble and racism are all up in auckland Here in Palmerston North everything are peaceful. When I walk to town I don't treat myself as asian or look at someone at the shop. He's european.I treat myself as a Human being .I just walk in and ask politely for help when there's something i want to buy. I don't think there are too many asians in NZ although I heard from my father says that in HK people there don't really care if there are alot of europeans. If you have the skills then people will hire you.Everyone is open minded. There's no pointing into the person and saying your european get out of the country. I'm not sure but I haven't met Asians that scream and shout in my life. The last time I heard someone screaming at me was like 10 years ago where I was walking to the carpark with my auntie.4 people who were European in the car started shouting racist comments. I didn't think much asians are causing problems. We seem to behave quite well.I haven't heard in the news that asians are causing problems.. Hmm.I find most asians are more logical than some other people. If you are wanting to discourage people like asians from coming to NZ.It pretty much shows how nice the government in NZ are

2008-04-02 05:37:00 | I have mixed results, there are good ones and crap ones. Just like any other race. With asian work mates etc I found the language barrier the worst aspect, but that was only a couple of guys. | rob_on_guitar (4196) | |

But when you start talking in another language (or even English) loudly for no apparent reason in an enclosed space it pisses me off . According to me if you go to a country to live or stay for along time, you should learn the language and speak it as much as possible and attempt to integrate . I know I'd try when I'm overseas . |

2008-04-02 07:30:00 | The thing I absolutely hate the most is how some Asians tend to scream and shout in public places in their own languages. I guess it applies to all foreign languages, but I hear Asians doing so mostly. I have never noticed this and I work / socialise with all sorts of people, including a number of Asians. I get annoyed at Kiwis who do exactly this so I don't think it is only Asians who 'scream and shout in public places'. I get annoyed with inconsiderate behaviour irrespective of race. Not only that, many Asians still decide to not integrate into NZ society and remain reclusive from other races and congregate with their own people and make little or no effort to befriend someone of another race.I find that extremely rude and arrogant. I don't find it rude - often it is a question of shyness and/or not wanting to intrude. Also, it cuts both ways. You could ask why Kiwis don't try to befriend more Asians? I presume a number of the younger Asians are foreign language students (especially in the city) and it would be very hard to associate with Kiwis who are outside of your circle of contacts within the foreign language school. Given a number of students may come from the same country, and/or speak the same language, then it makes sense they 'hang out' together. Also the old saying probably applies : "birds of a feather flock together". It's easier. IMO it's not rude - it's just life. In general, all this applies to the young Asians - the generation which predominantly matters for the future. Older Asians, the fathers and mothers etc find it much harder to integrate due to language barriers and different social structures. Understood 100%. The parents of one of my friends emigrated from China 40+ years ago - the mother still cannot speak English. We aren't necessarily familiar with foreign social structures and etiquette etc so sometimes we need to be educated what some foreigners perceive to be socially acceptable practices. In my opinion it cuts both ways. I think we have a lot to learn from other cultures. Just my opinion! Cheers, Andrew
