655033 2008-04-01 19:45:00 That does not bode well for people with IT jobs, that's for sure. :dogeye:

I still find it hard to believe the government (stupid as it is) has actually put itself into this situation.

Look at what's happening, and what are they doing about it?? :sleep

:groan:

655034 2008-04-01 20:48:00 How unsurprising.
I rang a friend last night about the proposed Wind Farm down here - its 5km from her place.
She is preparing to complain already - as it will "ruin her view".
Bollocks.
I knew they'd all whinge.

655035 2008-04-01 22:16:00 I am really sick of selfish people ****ing with the rest of us.

This is the type of issue the government should have more power in. We need power - badly. Wind farms are a very environmentally friendly and sustainable method of generating power, albeit not the cheapest, but they work.
And they don't look that bad! I think they are quite nice to look at (www.the-eic.com(Shell)WINDFARM.jpg) really.

Tararua farm (www.trustpower.co.nz).

If the people don't like it, move! ***.

Get the government to pay compensation or something. Selfish ******s.

655036 2008-04-01 23:23:00 Don’t worry guys.

Government will legislate. That’s the way they fix everything.

They’ll just make it unlawful for a generator not to produce enough power. ;)

Problem solved. :D

655037 2008-04-01 23:31:00 Why aren't we building more hydro. Also tidal and wave generation is an option. robbyp (2751)
655038 2008-04-01 23:34:00 Why aren't we building more hydro.

Same type of problem - especially with the Maoris wanting it all. The environmental impact of hydro schemes is much greater than wind, not that it bothers me, but you get fish and game kicking up a stink about it, and the same thing will happen - nothing.

Also tidal and wave generation is an option.

The government think this is still too expencive to be a viable option. NZ has a fair few ideal spots for using the tide to generate power.

655039 2008-04-02 01:24:00 Why not more Hydro schemes?

Well, we've done all the easy, economic ones already, while our power generation was mostly in Govt, public good, hands . You can only extract so much stored energy from a river for a given volume or a given distance at a given rate of fall - greater is better in all respects . Now that it's by and large privatised the private corporations need to justify very large capital expenditures to their shareholders on schemes that are not ideal and, they'll want to be able to recoup that expenditure as quickly as possible, usually by upping the prices consumers pay (you'd think it was already factored in, eh!) .

So, it seems we, the public ain't good enough any more to justify new hydro schemes and I for one blame the feckless yoof of today .

Nationally, lake storage levels were not as bad as they were leading into the 1992 winter power crisis, but levels were much lower than this time last year . The 30-day average inflows had been about 88 per cent of the average, indicating the recent topup after several dry months .

A year ago, wholesale power prices were about 6 cents a kilowatt hour, but in the past week prices have been close to 20c .

To why the massive price hike in comparison to last year? Someone's making a killing at our expense .

They (= some company, I can't remember their name) is looking at trialling a Scottish tidal generator scheme in the Cook Straight . Last I heard it was at resource consent stage .

Tidal, IMESHO, is the better option to develop than wave power, because unless those dastardly w**kers at M$* stop the moon revolving around the earth, it's always available .

* Mark my words, they'll try, in fact I've heard from an impeccable source that they've already applied for patents and have a draft EULA . They'll be wanting royalty fees off the lot of us, not to mention that the moon is odds on to crash within a week of the release of M$s version . So if you see a Blue Moon, for gawds sake try to decipher the error message so we can come up with a work-a-round . Failing that, order in plenty of crackers, pickled onions and wine .
