2009-07-31 06:18:00 | A friend of my mum & dad's has asked me to fix her laptop... I've got it going way better than it was, but there are two things that are bugging me. When I click on a window (button, icon, menu, anywhere) the window loses focus. I have to alt-tab to select the window, and use keys to select what I want. Windows update fails everytime I run it (going to update.microsoft.com). It suggests I add 3 or 4 update URLs to my trusted sources and to my firewall settings, but it's made no difference. Can anyone help with either of these problems? Could they be related somehow? Laptop is running Win XP Home SP3. Trying to get to windows update using IE7. Cheers, Mike.

2009-07-31 07:00:00 | Have you done the usual malware scans yet? And post a HijackThis log here. The hosts file may also be blocking WU. Try running this also: www.softpedia.com Blam

2009-07-31 21:50:00 | Hi. No I haven't done the usual malware scans yet - I'll do that now. Hosts file not blocking anything. I can get into Windows update, and get to click "Express" or "Custom"... it does its search then gives an error. The error is "Error number: 0x80072EE2". Apparently its a time-out error, but it is happening everytime I run it (over the last three days). I can run Windows Update no problem from my computer on the same connection, and I don't appear to be having any other internet connection issues on this laptop (surfing and downloading seems to work just as fast as on my computer). I ran the Dial-a-fix you suggested, but it still doesn't update. I removed SP3 as I thought maybe it was connected to that (I installed SP3 a couple of days ago)... that didn't make any difference though. Here's my hijackthis log: Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 8:42:00 a.m., on 1/08/2009 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16876) Boot mode: Normal Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgwdsvc.exe C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\ConfigFree\CFSvcs.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\DVDRAMSV.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgrsx.exe C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgnsx.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\TCtrlIOHook.exe C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\TOSHIBA Controls\TFncKy.exe C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgtray.exe C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\TOSCDSPD\toscdspd.exe C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\GoogleToolbarNo tifier.exe C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqtra08.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\RAMASST.exe C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqSTE08.exe C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe R0 - | 796812 | 2009-07-31 23:42:00 | If you know the kb of the updates you need download the installation files on another comp and try installing manually using a flash drive. | gary67 (56) | |
2009-08-01 02:06:00 | Thanks for the suggestion gary67. If this were my laptop I'd probably do that, but as it's someone elses, I'd really like to get Windows Update working so that they can keep the computer updated without too much hassle. I have removed java, and removed that line using hijackthis, but no change - still can't get windows update working properly. I'm now leaning towards a full reinstall, but I'm hoping it doesn't come to that. The laptop seems to run quite well (now) other than the WU problem. Cheers, Mike.

2009-08-01 02:14:00 | try this: 1. Close all the open windows. 2. Click Start->Run, type: %windir% and press Enter. 3. Locate and open the System32 folder. 4. Find the CatRoot2 folder, right-click on it, and select RENAME. Change the name to CR2OLD. Make sure you press Enter after typing in the new name, so the changes are executed. 5. Close this window. 6. Go back to the Microsoft Windows Update Website and check the result there.

2009-08-01 04:22:00 | I renamed CatRoot2 (had to do it in safe mode) and then tried again, but still the same problem. This is really weird. Cheers, Mike.
