655426 2008-04-02 11:15:00 lol..To be honest my parents didn't force me to bring a rice cooker when I visited them two years ago

but..I am still not use to NZ food.

I don't really enjoy food that people cook at their place

I was flatting last year and man was it awful.I went out everyday to have a decent meal.

Their meal were basically potatoes, peas, steak, stew, corn beef.

Hmm..Just not my type of food

I hate potatoes

One thing for sure.I am confident to say that many people are leaving NZ.All my friends left NZ after graduating.

I had a friend who studied here and was thinking to stay in NZ but went to other countries instead.Better pay and more things to do

My other friend who was born in NZ graduated at massey and left to teach in korea and now quit his job to teach Japan. He loves it there.More food.More things to do.Better pay.

They shouldn't just stop immigration but choose the ones that are more educated.

I think I heard somewhere that my friend's friend who had a high salary was willing to establish a company but was turn down.

Well yeah, why wouldn't you leave? I mean there really isn't anything worth earning or working towards in NZ. Its just better to leave ASAP after graduation or after all your qualifications are done and make your money elsewhere.

Not necessarily Australia btw. Actually not Australia at all.

655428 2008-04-02 16:09:00 Asians are great... but they're lousy drivers! lol

As for NZ food... Ninjabear... you say you hate potatoes? Man, you obviously haven't tried my rosemary sauted potatoes! And what about deep fried potato chips (aka french fries)? Mmmmm

And baked potatoes with sour cream and fresh chives! Double mmmmmm

655430 2008-04-02 18:26:00 People are people, I couldn't care less if the face of the nation has different shaped features in 50 years . I would expect it .

I will also note that the Europeans didn't exactly assimilate into Maori culture on arrival, More likely exploited it and then discriminated against it .

Sucks to be a hypocrite aye?

This is the post I was looking for .

Absolutely right - we are all immigrants here, the only difference is time .

Change is inevitable .

I have no problem with Asians on a person by person basis
What I do find however is that as a whole; Asians, Indians, and a few other races are generally reclusive and will quite happily blabber in there own language in front of you . This I find to be highly rude . I have no problems with them wanting to keep their language alive, and being proud by keeping their culture going, but a bit more integration might be beneficial .

Taking up Metla's very good point, we could re-write Myth's myth from a Maori perspective as follows:
"I have no problem with (Pakeha) on a person by person basis
What I do find however is that as a whole; (English, Scots,) and a few other races are generally reclusive and will quite happily blabber in there (sic) own language in front of you . This I find to be highly rude . I have no problems with them wanting to keep their language alive, and being proud by keeping their culture going, but a bit more integration might be beneficial . "

In fact, we (Pakeha) came in here and took over the whole show, and banned teaching in the medium of te reo Maori to hasten the whole process of separating Maori from their land and culture . Hypocrisy indeed to read these comments on "Asians" .

The same things were being said in the 1950's about "the bloody Poms", Dutch, Hungarians, Czechs, Poles, etc etc etc . And Jews in the 1930's and 1940's .

The thing I find really offensive though is that prat from NZ Last (Brown) as a first generation migrant telling us who we should and should not allow into the country . He keeps banging on about everyone except people from the country he comes from . A little humility might go a long way, but he is incapable of humility, or irony come to that . W****r .

Yup. Been here all my life. NZ is good for that laid back lifestyle for retirees or laid back people. There is no energy here. The pay is not high here and lifestyle is slow. After work you cannot go shopping for an event b/c they are closed. Even Saturday night is not possible.

There is no times square here, no portobello, no camden market, burroch market, or a proper fish market. Being that NZ is famous for its seafood and dairy product with its green image.
If I was walking down any street in NZ apart from say Waitangi, what is culture.

They don't know how to cook. NZ/British cuisine has been boring ie., boiled veges and stuff and mash. Funny that cuisine now us fusion with French and Italian flavour and into asian as well like lemon grass, chillies, and curry, heck in London one of the more popular food is curry.

I know what you mean thou, some have like baked beans or hamburgers for dinner, pizza, grilled sausage and steaks - its always from the freezer :D after buying fresh ;) toasty sandwiches. I spent a year in a homestay while at uni, and the family with children and they always had meat, steaks or chops or snitzel and they always had potato mash with no butter or seasoning and boiled veges/salads, Friday was fish and chips. They made a homemade pizza once for that year and sometimes spaghetti boggansaise. Lunch for them was like sandwich and cream buns .. Dang I think their steaks had no seasoning either when cooked.. Everything was like welldone and hey what is medium rare.

655433 2008-04-02 23:31:00 I know a Maori friend, and he's going back to Japan this yr after last yr to see their parents, I think he's even given free accom there with friends he's met here. He's also going to Laos.

With immigration if Mr Brown wants more non-asian immigrants then why are not more of them wanting to come over here ... :D I mean all people here in NZ I know, if we are given opportunities to live in NZ or London or NYC or SYD or Vancouver, I know where I would go...

In my opinion, I think NZ can make welfare harder to get for immigrants - that the purpose of migrating is to get a job and work and like all countries and I think NZ too - that they require a deposit in their bank as part of the immigration requirements, that if they get in and meets the requirements, if cannot get a job yet - they have money to live on .. Something like 3yrs before eligible for welfare, maybe get compulsory health insurance ...... so they are attracting the correct people for the right reasons.

I dunno, but I have been told that many countries have tightened their welfare policies.. NZ is still quite open in that regard. Personally I would like to see more welfare cut backs for the whole of NZ as well... NZ is from what I hear, a welfare state.

Then if less people come in and we get a negative growth in population .. well :p what is the reason that NZ is unattractive.

I mean Australia has tightened welfares for NZders.

My parents brought it up that the welfare is too kind here, and they think it will just take time for it be tightened up .. like other countries. They are near retirement and they think maybe the retirement age will be pushed up to 68yr old and they have to work for a few more years after already doing 40yrs of work in NZ. And they say the younger people in NZ might not even get a pension plan when they retire ...

655434 2008-04-02 23:54:00 As for markets - when it comes to food -

I've seen an enormous variety of fruit & vegetables at Avondale's Sunday market.
And although the "new" ones are mainly sold by Asians & Polynesians, they're not the only people buying them.
NZ's "fusion" is moving into a wider variety of cooking than you'll find in most other countries. You can't compare it with ethnic groups who've cooked only their traditional foods for centuries.

Ours has the prospect of including the best of many food traditions...
... though it helps if you're prepared to try cooking it yourself.
It takes generations to develop national dishes.

655435 2008-04-03 00:34:00 I've been here for so many years.I don't see much variety of food

I ask my friend hey, what's for dinner? He says roast

The other friend say um baked potatoes with salad and steak

So the food NZ always eat are

potatoes,kumaras,salad,fries,steak,roast.

Very plain and very boring if you ask me.

No offence.I haven't really been eating NZ cooked food.

I like it how there's more choice overseas.Hmm..I wanna go back soon
