656305 2008-04-06 10:48:00 If you had $50 000.00 to invest, what would you do with it, given the dire situation with regular investment companies? I'm talking about short to medium term, eg 1 - 3 years.

When do you get the 50K Greg?

656306 2008-04-06 10:49:00 There's a lot of opinions and advice (some good) Greg but I'd like to know what criteria you/they have. What is the probability the cash is wanted in 1 year versus 3 years? Is this advice sought for someone who is retiring? What sort of risk profile do you/they want? Do you want to be absolutely certain you will get all of the money back? Or are you willing to take some risk with the capital in trying to get a better than bank return?

IMO absolute 'No' to managed funds and precious metals. I'd be happy to debate/elaborate.

I wouldn't recommend that website, because it uses a SQP Score for ranking finance companies, and some of these companies that failed were actually ranked with a & b's, which makes them sound quite safe, when they weren't. However I do find their daily briefing videos quite good. They tipped property prices to drop 30%, before the ANZ predicted it. I am waiting for this to happen to grab some bargains.

656308 2008-04-06 11:15:00 I would put it in a term investment at Kiwibank. All the other banks are Aussie owned aren't they? If/when the economic situation becomes dire, I can't imagine the overseas owners of our banks looking after us.

Load of crap. What makes you think that Kiwibank is immune to the global credit crunch?

I hate those KB ad's that turn it into Aussie banks vs NZ (aka KB) I mean, NZ ITSELF sold its banks to the Aussies, its not like they came over and took them over by force.

Now people realize it was a mistake and cant bloody stop whinging about it. There should be nothing nationalistic about a bank. Stupid Kiwibank.

656309 2008-04-06 11:42:00 When do you get the 50K Greg?Dunno for sure. Depends on whether the ex can afford to pay me out or if the court makes us sell the house and split the proceeds.

Andrew, looks like term deposit will be the way to go.

Thanks for all the opinions folks.

656310 2008-04-06 16:11:00 Come on Joe, There is no hate in her view .

Though I don't think many people outside of America will be upset at Americas fall from grace, The time has come .

Considering that many INTERNAL residents too won't mind, it's not a nationalistic thing with me either and I feel personally upset when I get lumped into the whole picture as an American with an agenda .

All I wanted to say and to be understood was that although I LIVE in the US . . . that doesn't make me the enemy of all other countries and especially NZ .

656313 2008-04-06 21:50:00 Stupid Kiwibank.

Hey I like them.
I compared the lot for business banking and Kiwibank came out best by miles.
