655706 2008-04-04 21:05:00 Didn't they try that in Aussie? Big exhaust = small schlong.

Or maybe it was the stereo. Loud stereo = small schlong. Thats what the Mrs says to - they have to have something else bigger/louder in the car to make up for being inadequate in other departments. Nice Lady my Wife :) Mind you dont call her a lady - she'll belt ya!

655707 2008-04-04 21:42:00 Agreed, a great engine, good power/torque/weight ratio, and reliable (but you must change the oil/filter at regular intervals (5000 or 10000km) as they tend to block up the (very small diameter) holes in the camshaft lobe/rocker arm oil supply tubes (this is all that lubricates them), if they do it will start to rattle and squeak ( and it's TOO LATE to fix it!); also keep an eye on the antifreeze level and the hoses underneath the inlet manifold (out of sight, tend to get hard and burst)) .

Thanks for the advice .

I (try) to change the oil every 10,000km . I was a little late this time

I'll also check on those hoses whenever I have the opportunity .

:thanks

655709 2008-04-05 17:27:00 Back to the noise part of the original post (wow . . I am trying to KEEP a post on topic . . imagine!)

One of my K5 Blazers . . CAUTION: jpegs! . . . (HERE ( . imagef1 . net . nz/files/100_2416 . JPG" target="_blank">www . imagef1 . net . nz) HERE ( . imagef1 . net . nz/files/100_2418 . JPG" target="_blank">www . imagef1 . net . nz) HERE ( . imagef1 . net . nz/files/100_2048 . JPG" target="_blank">www . imagef1 . net . nz), this last one with a couple of buddies and the front end of one friend's Ford 4WD truck, nose to nose with my Blazer) has a pretty special engine ( . imagef1 . net . nz/files/K5_Underhood_00 . JPG" target="_blank">www . imagef1 . net . nz) that I built just for towing large and heavy trailers, etc .

Here's a pix of the Blazer earning a wage ( . imagef1 . net . nz/files/100_2740 . JPG" target="_blank">www . imagef1 . net . nz) pulling a house back into plumb with the front winch . The house had the chimney fall over in about 1982 from an earthquake, it sat and went all out of plumb and sank a foot or so on the forward front corner from all the weight . I helped re-set it on a new bond beam (wall with rebar the whole length) and then had to pull it back into plumb .

I had 38 inch (just over 1 meter, I think) glasspack mufflers ( . jcwhitney . com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product?storeId=10101&Pr=p_Product . CATENTRY_ID%3A2006458&TID=8014524F&TID=8014524F&productId=2006458&catalogId=10101" target="_blank">www . jcwhitney . com) on a split exhaust system, dumping out just before the rear wheels in bells . These are not the same brand nor the same length, but you can get the idea of what a glasspack is . ( . truckaddons . com/Catalog/subpages/flowtech_purplehornies . htm" target="_blank">www . truckaddons . com)

Loud!?! Yup .

I finally got tired of the noise and just last Wednesday I changed the dual glasspacks ( . partsandaccessories . com/images/perfthumbs/flowtech/50225 . jpg" target="_blank">www . partsandaccessories . com) out for some nice OE-type mufflers, still leaving the exhaust split, side-to-side .

Much quieter I must say . . . but there's a downside now .

I drive harder and faster and push the speed limit more . . . now that I can do so without waking the dead .

The older system, which was noisy . . . . . had me tend to keep outta the loud pedal and now I don't mind pushing it a lot more .

Your street racers (NZ= boy racers) would be a little more conservative with their speed if they get caught for noise I would think .

Maybe NZ is going the wrong way with this idea .

Sorry for all the pixs and stuff . . . I just got carried away again . . . but I stayed (mostly) on topic this time .

655710 2008-04-06 12:34:00 I think what gets me about this whole thing is that the whole boy racer thing aside, loud exhausts often come out of factory; the current 'limit' is meant to be around 95 decibels right? So when the Oz-made Fords and Holdens come out of the factory with levels higher than that, no problem- it's factory after all . Yank-made Harley hogs waaaay above 95 decibels? No trouble .

Anyone with a performance import from Japan who buys it with or takes the trouble to modify the exhaust for better performance? Nup, drag 'em outta the car, hang 'em high and crush their car .

Most intrusive vehicle noises for me (stupid blow off valves aside) have been bikes and holden V8's, all of which I might point out are driven either by the old and rich, or those 'outside' the system and won't comply anyway because this will simply be another reason for the police to pay them attention, which they'll already be used to .

Don't get me wrong- I have no sympathy for street racers, or anyone being irresponsible with high performance vehicles, especially those on alcohol, drugs or whatever . We all pay for their stupidity even if not directly affected through higher insurance premiums and more police attention/ legislation .

But if the government think that buy regulating exhaust noises they will curb the boy racer issue, they have another thing (think?) coming . The Boy racer legislation came out what? Three years ago? Can't say it's worked so far . . . I doubt this will either .

655711 2008-04-06 13:39:00 motorbikes are generally built to the 96decibel competition limit, and often gain a few decibels as the fibreglass packing slowly comes out. does this new law intend to restrict factory mufflers also?

and another note: loud bikes save lives. ever heard a bike coming before you saw it? made you look? exactly the point.

why couldn't they leave the limit at 95 and just bring in the tests? what about idiots with subwoofers in the boot on max volume?

Loud Cars belong in the metal scrap dump your damaging the environment. Cars don't combust with organic compounds to its full potention less then 20 percent efficienty anyway so you get allot of CO produced which cannot be absorbed by plants.

you obviously have no idea what you're talking about, or have very poor communication skills. lucky for you many boy racers do actually lose performance by installing ridiculously large pipes, just like they blow gearboxes when they install a turbo and put alot of stress on their electrical system by running several amps for their stereo.

removing that pesky catalytic converter is not too good for emissions either...

but, getting a higher flow exhaust system can increase economy, provided the vehicle is tuned for that exhaust.

you should be more worried about people using turbochargers and driving aggressively than anything else. and what about all those fine particulates in diesel fumes? acid rain from sulphur released by burning coal?

.

In factory tune they are barely audible, Plus all bikes and cars will be subject to the same tests when they are getting a WOF .

As always, The honest people will comply, Those that don't care will continue to not care and simply muffle there wagon or bike just to get a WOF .

Though I would be pretty keen to see . . .

"Anyone with a performance import from Japan who buys it with or takes the trouble to modify the exhaust for better performance? Nup, drag 'em outta the car, hang 'em high and crush their car" .

Though I'm just as keen to get the green light to lob a few bricks at them as they do there regular wank-off drive-bys past my house . As it is the only enjoyment I get is giving them the universal "tosser" hand signal when I see them out and about .

655713 2008-04-06 21:51:00 I kinad gotta agree... I specifically put a *smaller* exhaust on my bike to increase visibility, couldnt count the number of times before getting it I got cut off because people simply dont look properly.

I now find drivers are at least slightly more aware of my presence, however Im always trying to think two-steps ahead of any other drivers and act early to avoid a bad situation rather than reac!

Bang on the nail there .

either that or that install the biggest turbo they can afford onto their 1600CC Honda thats already running a 9 . 5\10:1 compression ratio and to make things worse make no changes to the fuel system and then cry to mummy when they melt a piston cause they leaned the car right out when trying to race someone :yuck:

im rather happy with the exhaust system on my car - made a big difference in power\torque and while it is louder its not at all annoying ;)

always cracks me up when boy racers nail it and out comes a big puff of black smoke. someday they'll learn running rich doesn't help... probably the same day they'll realise that bike they're "racing" is just cruising off the lights at half throttle:lol:
