654833 2008-04-01 10:33:00 You suspected I'm indifferent to how its "done" in Aussie?

Lets not get into the habit of dismissing Kiwi opinions of kiwi related affairs with reports on how the aussies do it aye?

Lest we all start eating Dagwood dogs........

Well as a KIWI commenting on KIWI related affairs I was actually pointing out the 4 million plus mixture of kiwis and aussies (if you want to get all racist about it) in Queensland have NO problem with bag searches.

Add in the rest of the population that in general have no problem with it and you can see it is a non event.

654834 2008-04-01 10:53:00 The a civil rights organisation recommended that innocent shoppers ask the security officer if he/she are excercising citizens arrest

The old myth of the "citizens arrest". Everybody has powers of arrest - what makes cops different is that they aren't (personally) liable for any screw ups (as in, you can't sue them).

654835 2008-04-01 19:11:00 well gee thanks for that helpful and insightful comment, just proves what I always suspected of you Metla.

:clap It is his fortè. His acumen is well known in Wanganui and on this forum. He has acrimony down to a fine art. :groan:

Yep, How they do it in Aussie is a non-event.

About as relevant as bag searches in petrol station toilets in Iran.

But, Hey, Thanks for that Skippy, Love your work.

This seems to be a poll asking people their reactions if they were asked.
Then you object because Metla says he isn't keen on the idea.

What, he should consult you first on what answer he should give?

Stuff bag searches, most people are sheep anyway and will go along with whatever outrage is committed without complaint.

654838 2008-04-01 22:03:00 With respect for everyone's individual opinion, I actually work in a large retail business (turnover of $60 million a year etc) and have quite a bit to do with Loss Prevention here; our guys regularly inspect bags, but only if they're pretty darn sure someone has something in there . We also have Electronic Article Surveillance readers that go off if someone leaves with out paying . We do random bag searches on non-suspicious customers VERY rarely .

My point is that I see the numbers that account for stolen stock, and it's not pretty . When something gets stolen, you don't only lose the cost of the product, but the profit you would have made on it too . You have to sell another 8 or so to cover that loss .

Theft is a massive problem is New Zealand, and unless we all want higher prices to cover these losses, then consenting to the odd bag search is a small price to pay IMHO .

Exactly.
Not random nosiness.

Yep, thats all good.

I think that's what most people have been saying.

I wouldn't mind - if they had legitimate reason to.

If it was just a spot check type thing, I would tell them to...well...family forum here.
