797061 2009-08-04 07:04:00 What?!

VLC uses FFMPEG to play back most things, as well as x264, faad... There is very few things that VLC can *not* play, not to mention you CAN use plugins with VLC (See: the Plugins dir).

The title is what do you watch your "dvds" with ..

Since putting my first own PC up this January, I haven't watched one movie on it yet, we just use the lounge.

Dam Some People Annoy Me!!

Some people annoy me too.. Like those who should go back to school and learn that you don't need a capital letter at the start of every word...

I used to use WinDVD but now usually use PowerDVD or VLC.

Sometimes I also try to use the DVD player connected to my TV but if the DVD uses macrovision it plays havoc with my ancient equipment and looks like rubbish.

End result: I have to illegally copy the DVD first to make it playable because the copy-protection that DOESN'T WORK causes any legal viewing to be a nightmare.

When will these people learn that copy protection only inconveniences the legal user and makes pirates laugh?

797064 2009-08-06 03:25:00 I have to admit that the latest versions of VLC has NOT impressed me AT ALL when it comes to playing DVD's.
Also don't thing video playback quality is all that great anymore either - especially when upscaling.
VLC 0.8.6x was the peak of VLC development IMO.

I've basically moved to Media Player Classic - Home Cinema for most of my video needs.

Check out the two snips I took below comparing the quality of VLC vs MPC-HC.

797066 2009-08-06 05:40:00 I use Media Player Classic. Has never failed on me. All regions playable. I hated Win DVD. Gave me a restrictions on what region I wanted. vims213 (15007)

That will be a settings issue - when set up correctly, those artifacts will go, but it's not the default (although I think it should be).

Using the built-in MPC-HC H.264 decoder.

Do you have any suggestions as to how to setup VLC properly? It's hardly the most... informative preferences box.

Hmmm.. just tried playing a DVD, and found out that S/PDIF output is STILL broken on windows!
It's been like that since 0.8.6 at least :(
