Of course, we've got more than enough dole bludging, wife beating, P users already, but most Asians don't fall in that category, so if they have skills to offer, why not let them in? Once you do that, there's no going back. Given the increasing size of the world's population and inevitable fight for resources, I'd say there's a fair benefit to maintaining this country's population to current levels. Why do you think so many people want to come and live here? It's because we are isolated and Asia/Europe etc are so damn overcrowded now. If I remember correctly, the Labour government mentioned that more are leaving the country. National thinks the nett loss is a crucial issue. Are we talking about population increase here or the increase of a certain race? It's a totally different issue altogether if the latter is true. For an economy to sustain itself, it needs a population of about 6-7 million at least. Don't ask me how I get this figure. It's too long to explain.	Taurus (9579)
655408	2008-04-02 08:52:00	I read the first couple of posts, then skipped the rest I have no problem with Asians on a person by person basis What I do find however is that as a whole; Asians, Indians, and a few other races are generally reclusive and will quite happily blabber in there own language in front of you. This I find to be highly rude. I have no problems with them wanting to keep their language alive, and being proud by keeping their culture going, but a bit more integration might be beneficial. When the planet is even more overcrowded than it is now, you won't be able to stop the waves after waves of illegal immigrants, be them Asians, Africans, Pacific Islanders, Americans, Europeans whatever. Being an island far away in the South Pacific has its advantages. Britain wasn't so bad until they went and built the Channel Tunnel. My concerns are a) NZ's population will explode and then there really won't be anywhere to enjoy a high standard of living with space and freedom to move b) The ethnic makeup will become unbalanced. What we have now is fair balance. For the most part we all get along pretty well in a multicultural society that encourages tolerance and respect. Watch that all go down the drain if immigration goes unchecked. Take Britain as an example.	legod (4626)
655411	2008-04-02 09:02:00	I'm born here. I dunno .. I am a member of a photographic club and a aviation club and not once I have been made hostile. I have worked in middle management of a govt department(s). NZ has some room to go yet .. when I was in London and Paris Chinatown with the look and the smell I thought I was in Hong Kong. What is interesting is that immigrants from all origin apply in and go via a process. If they wanted more non-asians then what is making NZ an unattractive place for them? If they restrict them via countries, its simple, they will just to elsewhere and other places prosper - Australia, UK, Canada, USA to name a few.. IMO I think asians come here for the lifestyle change. Largely Asia is known that is either not available or harder to obtain or its not a lot to get, is that if you lose your job or retire there is no government support. Its common said that the parents put the roof over your head, feed and clothe you, when its time for them to retire, its the children's duty to be the provider. I have not been paying attention, but not sure if the free trade agreement has favourism towards immigration from China. That aside, NZ has heaps to gain, talk about all the dairy products and wine and stuff that the increasingly wealth of chinese customers will demand and pay big bucks for NZ stuff. Any thing that is not Asian may be seen as trendy - pies, pizza, bread, butter, sandwiches, wines, beer, wine. Their ideal holiday is to Europe and eating in Japanese or Western restarants (Italian/French). The other day they were showing, kiwi's going to Shanghai to open a French restaurant and it was the top restaurant reviewed.	Nomad (952)

655413	2008-04-02 09:11:00	Plenty of hot asian girls make the place look fine . . . . damn fine . I know 2 asian girls in NZ got married with a kiwi western guy here and have children . I know a Christchurch guy who went to London on OE, and met up a asian girl and have together taken a mortgage on a apartment . Some western friend (not just in NZ) have said that asian girls are cute, petite and adorable, straight hair and fair skin that looks like makeup but none is applied . Some asian girls included my ex who was a flight attendant (Asian airlines tend to employ more attractive ones), said that western girls have hot bodies, with a larger body size while still slim they have more sizable breasts and long legs, like baywatch style . Do they accept New Zealand values and the New Zealand way of life and will they fit in with New Zealanders. No small country can afford to accept significant numbers of immigrants who are incapable of making an economic contribution to the country, and who are not prepared to accept the way of life in their host country. One has only to look to Britain where there are significant immigrant communities that have no wish to accept British values and the British way of life. Classic examples are home grown Islamic extremists, and agitation for the adoption of Sharia law in Britain.	KenESmith (6287)

Will be pretty hard to find that out if they haven't lived in NZ at all. But the test we should come up with is one that evaluates their willingness to integrate into our multicultural nation. Fail that test and turn them away. Problem is, how can we make a test that evaluates their will? his wife had made him bring the rice cooker. Yeah, sounds like my mum. Many Asian mothers are meticulous....me having my mother's genes, used to arrive at the bus stop 30 mins early, fearing it may come 30 mins early in the early hours of morning. Actually, barbequed steak with rice is pretty tasty, as I found out that week.
