654827 2008-04-01 07:43:00 lol what is the big deal?

Its standard over here in Australia. Virtually all major stores have someone standing on duty at the entrance/exit and they will ask to look in everyone's bags. They are not allowed to touch the bag but just look. try and deny it and watch the security guards come running.

The condition of entry is to allow a search of your bag and they are within their rights to enforce it if required.

No big deal as it is applied to all.

654829 2008-04-01 07:54:00 There was a case in UK where a Tesco supermarket detained a suspected shoplifter for over an hour, and it was subsequently discovered that the "detained shopper" did not have any stolen items in her possession.
Tesco got off the hook, because the woman shopper consented to accompany the security officer to the manager's office.

The a civil rights organisation recommended that innocent shoppers ask the security officer if he/she are excercising citizens arrest, and state that if they are not arrested by the security officer, that they intended to continue about their lawful business. ( I reckon even if one made this remark when guilty it would make the security officer think twice)

If the security officer then detained the shopper, he became liable for a suit for wrongful arrest. The mistake is voluntary accompanying the security officer if you are innocent and have nothing to hide.

654830 2008-04-01 08:54:00 I never have a bag.

But no, I wouldn't be co-operative.
My bag would probably have a mad, very abusive conversation with the unlucky searcher and proceed to punch his or her lights out. The same will happen to me if she read's this.

You suspected I'm indifferent to how its "done" in Aussie?

Lets not get into the habit of dismissing Kiwi opinions of kiwi related affairs with reports on how the aussies do it aye?

Lest we all start eating Dagwood dogs........
