797051 2009-08-03 07:07:00 Actually I think you'll find that WinDVD isnt all that great, thats why its bundled on so many Video DVD's that you rent / buy. PowerDVD on the other hand has always been top of the line, if not a little bit "bloatware".

VideoLAN client is pretty good, uses FFMPEG to decode and whilst its not the *best* in terms of CPU usage with h264 -- It's pretty irrelevant with DVD MPEG2 playback :)

MPC is great, MPC-HC also! :) Use that with some sort of "codec pack" that uses ffmpeg and you're set! :D

797052 2009-08-03 08:03:00 I have used both MPC and VLC many, many times to watch DVD's straight from the disc and they both play perfectly well, there is no noticeable drop in frame rates sound is as good as ever and they are both free which is a real bonus. Neither is bloated especially VLC and rarely require anything extra in the way of codecs or plugins. I have done some fairly extensive research and would not buy software that is no better than what I can use for free gary67 (56)

+1 :)

I always watch DVD's with VLC (gets past the annoying anti-piracy ads ) and I have never noticed a noticeable drop in frame rate or quality compared to other costly software.

797054 2009-08-03 09:17:00 Their Is A Noticeable Difference In Frame Rate. I Notice It. I Can See Where 13yroldcomputerguru is Coming From, Though Being A Bit Rude. He Just Wants People To Have Good Quality. PCmaster (9512)
797055 2009-08-03 09:57:00 My vote is with VLC, haven't had a problem and it will play almost anything. I've got a 13'' screen so quality is a moot point. limepile (96)

797058 2009-08-03 11:56:00 I use PowerDVD. I find the picture quality is better. VLC maybe more configurble, but it forgets it's configuration + the surround sound isn't as good as Powerdvd, if you can get it to work. Powerdvd plays IFO files, VLC doesn't, not the last time I used it, meaning you can't create shortcuts to your movies, double click them & watch. Powerdvd can. I've tried most of the media players & I reckon Powerdvd's the best Phil B (648)
