655043 2008-04-02 15:03:00 NZ has a fair few ideal spots for using the tide to generate power.

that's right we're an island after all......surrounded by HUGE amounts of ocean
i've never understood why tidal generation hasn't been around already for years.......

655044 2008-04-02 17:51:00 Tidal generation has been around for years, it generates lots of currents. R2x1 (4628)

It's very expensive - as materials used to build the generators are prone to corrosion.

655046 2008-04-03 00:31:00 I'm a fan of using tidal power too . There is a lot of research going on around the world on this energy source . Here is a blog on the topic . typepad . com/renewablesoffshore/tidal_power/index . html" target="_blank">carolynelefant1 . typepad . com and as you'll see, nothing is easy .

There is a project being tried in Cook Strait using tidal currents to run turbines . It is underwater so no danger to shipping .

There are two main problems - engineering in the marine environment is at the limits of mans capacity to control . The sea is a monster to harness .

Secondly, environmental concerns . Blocking an estuary to generate electricity creates all sorts of problems with the local flora and fauna, not to mention disrupting normal movements of sand and silt .

I'm convinced these problems can be overcome and feel very frustrated that such an obvious energy source at our front door gets ignored .

655047 2008-04-03 00:46:00 I work in the electrical generation industry and I hear Taupo is down to 20 days worth of water. Shortage of gas could delay re-comissioning of a major thermal unit, so badly needed right now.
I reckon my planned holiday in Europe from may to august is well timed!

Unless they ask you to cancel it :p
