655506 2008-04-06 00:43:00 OK. Ever tried food cooked in a Hangi? I cook curries from time to time.

Not in over 15 years. can't remember what it tastes like. :crying

655507 2008-04-06 00:45:00 Well, Rick Stein was on the box last night doing a clambake, which was basically a hole in the ground (the beach), same as a hangi or umu, except he used flat stones, and seaweed instead of fern. He didn't even use baskets - just chucked the clams, lobsters, crabs etc straight on to the seaweed, then covered it in piles more seaweed (no earth cover). All the kaimoana steamed, and everyone raved about it, so maybe it was either: 1) not "as bland as you could possibly make it", or 2) it was "as bland as you could possibly make it" but it suited the English taste, or 3) all the people partaking were Rick Stein's employees, and neither he nor they could be expected to say the food was crap.

Exactly how seafood should be cooked.......As blandly as possible so as to not destroy its natural flavour.

655508 2008-04-06 01:29:00 Hangi food is fantastic! All it needs is a bit of creative seasoning. The blending of the natural flavours of mixed veges and pork or whatever really make it. Not for everyday of course, but it is a fun lifestyle way of cooking.

If you're cooking lamb with the veges, add several whole stalks of rosemary. If pork, add a few halved apples. Fish, throw on some dill sprigs and perhaps chervil.

For red meat, sprinkle some beer and coke over the lot.

655509 2008-04-06 03:36:00 That may of been 16m sq or 20m sq. I don't think it was 5m width and 5m depth. We were over there for Xmas sometime ago. Slept on mattress at the lounge which took up 90% of the flooring of that room. No separate dining room.

The larger bedroom fitted a double sized bed - the width of the room was like the length of the bed. From the bed to the door frame you could put like 2x bath mats ..

The smaller room was a bit wider. But if you placed a double sized bed you wouldn't been able to open the door. My cousins before they got married they lived into their mid 20s in bunk beds.

When they had dinner they just pulled the round table out for dinner and when done, they push it back to the corner. Apart from that, there was like a 2 seat sofa in front of the tv and some stools which can be pulled under the round table.

In Auckland, those small apartments, students are prob the only ones getting them ..maybe some western students, but not sure, maybe they rather go flatting in the suburbs. I think given tha asian students are used to living in those cramp places, its easier for them to take in.

They been living like that for a good 10yrs at least. Before that they had more members in HKG, I think as a kid I was there, they may of had a 25m sq floorsize.

I have a long-time friend in a more modest Singapore. When he got married, I asked and he said it a bit of a culture thing that the wife moves in with the husband and they live with the husband's family. He is working and stuff .. overtime they had more money and they upgraded to a condo, they're now living together with his family ..

AFAIK, the tax breaks over in Asia are a bit better. For normal jobs the pay in NZ is maybe more, if you are skilled the Asian pay is more. If you are able to put in the hardwork and work more shifts or 2nd job or into the w'ends .. you can get more in Asia.

I was heading back from Europe one time and met this English guy and he was going back to Thailand (Phuket) as he as relocated and has a wife there and he said UK the lawn was like cut too neat. He quite liked Asia because, it was like more natural. People just did what they did .. and by walking down the streets you saw it .. while in UK everything is like so tidily managed that it was like a "giant queue". I think being born here, going to Asia is like going to say the Middle East like Oman or Morocca, its a a lot more alive and colorful. He sorted knew more/less what NZ is since it has ties with UK.

In NZ I find that everything you do you go inside a building. They don't have the sheltered markets and stuff like that or even food markets for that matter to eat a meal. Everyone goes out to work and come back after work and shops just close after that. Its like if life just evolves around that model.

655510 2008-04-06 03:55:00 My asian friend also had problem adjusting here

He was studying polytech and he was not use to the fact that there were nothing to do here.Everything closes at 5pm.He got so bored here in NZ he went back to Hk without graduating.I had to send dramas to him every two weeks so that at least he could do something.

I like it how shops over there open until 12am at night. My friend is currently working in japan. He likes it when he walks down from his apartment there are so many food outlets he just simply can't decide what to have.It was a better pay in japan. After working there and payed all his taxes he had the money to visit korea, hong kong, china, france.

I kinda like singapore being able to ring mcdonalds or kfc to deliver your meals.Wouldn't that be wicked?

The government he charges too much tax.

My parents got use to it here but they couldn't afford living here any more.Everything too expensive,Couldn't find a job + not a very good pay.

I think there's alot more varities on every aspect in hong kong and asia that I cant resist not going back.

lol.. funny thing was that when my grandma came from hk to nz to have a visit he got lost in our house..haha.It was only a 3 bedroom house.2 storeys but it wasn't really big.

I don't enjoy the layback and slow life in NZ.It annoys me.

Um, KFC actually do do deliveries here - not sure about McDs, but if you eat that kind of crap then it's no wonder you're dissatisfied with anything else

I don't enjoy the layback and slow life in NZ.It annoys me.So what you doing here then? I don't believe for a moment you're staying in godzone just for the rugby or our famous mermaids. NZ's laid-back lifestyle suits NZ'ers. If you're not a Kiwi and don't want to be one, then..... (insert your own words here)!

655512 2008-04-06 04:20:00 I got an addiction for travel. Cannot wait til I fly out later in the year. If I had my way I would fly out 3x a year. but in NZ every airticket cost like $2,000 that is if I don't go to Oz or the islands. Being addicted to airplanes too I need my 8+ hour flying dosage. And to get that culture shock.

In NZ there is just none of that "go go go".
You don't get bus after bus or train after train. Underground shopping or underground passage ways to commute around the city. No colorful markets or casual places to eat. You cannot go out for dinner on a week day and go to the department stores and look for presents or just shop for your own home. Night time it lacks neon and bright colors.

Even in the weekends there are not much public transportation and they are empty. While things are and look empty - it has a different feel to it. There is no bridges, no amateur musicians/bands playing music. People don't dress up colorful fashionable wear and hit a zone with their peers. No shoulder to shoulder of people traffic. There are no stores that has so much traffic inside.

I mean apart from go to work, go back home, to the supermarket and the local shopping mall and the inhouse restaurant and pub - what else is there .. Well the BBQ and the sports. But what else ..

I think why are young NZders leaving the country, lol. I may be wrong but how many young NZders want a mundane life. If they could go to Japan, London, New York or Sydney would they still pick NZ .. Campbell Live has reported, its not so much the money but its the lifestyle its the things NZ don't have.

Trying to make myself more excited, I try to go overseas 1x or 2x a year. Go off peak for shorter durations and push myself - spend like 2 night max per city and move on, get up like 6am each day to see sunrise and have breakfast and witness the morning commuter rush .. After work I belong to my photography club, aero club and once I finish my aero license, I want to get back into akikdo. Even if I have a aero instructor license I may even work in the w'ends.

With my photography here. Dang!, its boring. I have read and seen these amazing photographs of cityscapes in the city and what does NZ have. No bridges, no high height angles, no massive skyscrapers, no artful stair cases or miror glass sculptures, no neon. Its not a NYC style one, nor is it a Italy/Paris/Spain heritage one ..

655513 2008-04-06 04:22:00 I was in Singapore a stopover and this gay guy popped ove and said some words in mandarin and then cantonese, mine arn't that good but I understood every word of his

Let's just say I got freaked out and diverted to the other side of the terminal . He was a salesman at the computer store at the airport .

He called NZ . . dreamworld .

Clean seas, clean bush, fresh mountain air, no Euro or Asian Smog, no overcrowding, Kiwis, great weather, NZ people, foreigners (many who actually like it here), great seafood, world's best oysters, islands.... the list goes on.

Nomad... ditto to you what I said to Ninjabear.
