657976 2008-04-11 10:06:00 Anyone know how Dell New Zealand can justify charging it's NZ customers, so much more, than what they charge their USA customers, through their primary www.dell.com website?

For example, their USA website is currently selling the 2408WFP 24 inch monitor for $US 599 (has a $100 'discount'), this equates to $NZ 750. You then need to add on GST and a bit for postage. However the NZ price for this same monitor is currently $NZ1200 (I believe it did also used to be higher than this a few weeks ago). That is a huge difference in price, especially considering they are being sold through the same company and probably distributed from the same place.

I can only think that give their US customers a better deal, because it is a USA owned company and they want to show loyality to their USA customers. If this is the case, I wish that Fonterra took a note out of their book.

The funny thing is, that people who write reviews of the products they purchase on the USA Dell.com website, still say that the product is expensive at $599.

657977 2008-04-11 10:18:00 You also have to add state sales tax on the of that US price plod (107)
657978 2008-04-11 10:25:00 I would still agree with robbyp as sales tax while varying from state to state is the same or less than our GST so that still doesn't account for the price gouging considering the current exchange rate.

Dell is still looking at reducing their head count by 8,800 to make themselves "more profitable" in the competitive PC manufacturing world where margins are becoming increasingly slim at the bottom end.

True, although if I purchased it as a NZer from the US Dell site (which Dell don't allow you do) I would then pay GST when it enters NZ , plus freight.
I guessing that they haven't modified their pricing ratio for when the exchange rate changes. I would assume the current pricing was worked out at the exchange rate when 50-60 US cents would buy a NZ dollar. It's now at 80 cents. Perhaps Dell think we haven't noticed, or that we don't compare prices that they sell products for to other markets.

Dell don't care if you have noticed, They care about numbers being shipped and profit, If they are happy with the current numbers then they will keep them at that level.....

Besides, Marketing can fix anything, especially when comnbined with crap service, cost cutting, and crap products.

Interesting. I guess we are a very profitable market to them on a margin basis, and perhaps that is why they do so much advertsing here.

657982 2008-04-11 19:10:00 Its like most things in NZ that we are ripped off for.

Digital cameras, Mobile call rates, petrol, tvs, and now milk and cheese.

One of the reasons as I KEEP SAYING is that our population is too low. If we had say twice the population here companies would sell twice as much so that they can pay for their head office and managers etc etc. And when a sales rep drives round New Zealand he would sell twice as many goods to pay for his trip.

But most people cannot work that out and want to stay a backwater and complain about being ripped off.

Its just what they do.

I don't believe that should be the case for Dell, as they are solely a online company operated outside NZ , and ship all products to NZ and to the rest of the world (probably shipped from the same location), so the price should be similar wherever in the world they ship.
What I think they are doing is price gouging NZers, with is unethical. Dells Australian subwebsite is similar, but the products do still appear slightly cheaper after taking into account the exchange rate.

They can charge whatever they like - they're a private company. Just like the dairy down the road can charge you $10 for a bottle of milk if they want.
