657792 2008-04-10 11:47:00 Hi all

I want to buy a HDD DVD recorder and can't decide between the Panasonic DMR-EH67 and the Pioneer DVR-650H. Consumer ranked the Panasonic slightly above the Pioneer 550H (same as the 650H but with a smaller HDD). Correcting tracking errors was the only thing the Panasonic did notably better; picture and audio were not too far apart. So, any recommendations here from people who have used one or both? I'm not worried about the music or still photos/video features - I'm just interested in DVD recording and playback features and quality.

From reading the manuals, the Pioneer has a lot of custom settings for output and input which the Panasonic lacks. It also has all the manual recording mode settings and XP+, while the Panasonic has just the standard range and flexible recording (though the Panasonic's LP is supposed to be almost as good as its SP). The Pioneer won't let you manually select the aspect for recording (16:9, 4:3), while the Panasonic will.

Any comments on these or other features/differences/experiences?

Many thanks, Dominic

657793 2008-04-10 19:51:00 Read the Specs carefully, some of the models now are restricted to playing Zone 4 DVD's only.

Also consider the Sony RDR-HX750 it is a good one. There are a couple of threads here on HDD/DVD recorders here try a search.

Pioneer is not even in the running.

If it's a Panasonic - I know because I have one - Next Electronics will unlock it for free (24 hour turnaround) under warranty.

First thing I did was download the manuals for the Sony, Pioneer, and Panasonic and read them and check the multizoning. I have also searched the web and (this forum) extensively but have not found much direct comment from users (especially of the Pioneer). I discounted the Sony because it scored low in the Consumer test, because it doesn't do DVD RAM, and because the Pioneer seems to have all the features the Sony offered over the Panasonic, as well as most of the features the Panasonic offered over the Sony.

Multizoning is not a problem - the Pioneer is multizoned and the shop I will likely buy from confirmed they will mutlizone the Panasonic if I wish to go that way.

Bantu, why do you say the Pioneer is "not even in the running"? Some specific criticisms would be helpful.

And Cicero, have you had any problems with the Pioneer not choosing the correct aspect when recording (you might see this when playing back 16:9 on a different DVD player)? How have you found the picture quality and do you use the options to create user-specified input and output settings (YNR, BNR, MNR, etc)? What is the lowest setting you would record on? And any problems with it skipping or not tracking well on scuffed disks (the only area the 550H scored low in the Consumer test) ?

Anyone using the Panasonic find it annoying not being able to directly select non-standard recording modes (MN1-MN32)?

DominicI haven't recorded to a disc,I just love rording to H/D and watching later with that 6 click business for 3 mins fast forward.
I have used it to watch a DVD and it was as good as I want.No skipping etc.
I do all my H/D recording on highest quality,I tend to watch and delete,so no probs with having just 160gb.

657799 2008-04-11 06:54:00 Any reason for buying a DVD recorder? Would it not be better to buy a Freeview PVR so you can record digital television instead of analogue? Many have network functionality so you can transfer recordings to your computer (where you could burn a DVD). maccrazy (6741)
657800 2008-04-11 08:38:00 For myself,I have no knowledge of how freeview works at all.

No doubt it will reach me in the next 6 months.
