656796 2008-04-07 07:17:00 I finally killed the sad thing called a washing machine in my house......... i refuse to get it fixed for the fifth time. :banana

So what im wanting to know is what brands are good or what to steer clear of? im not keen on fisher and pykel.

I have westinghouse and bosch appliances in my house, but am more financially defunct at the moment.:p so am looking for something a little less flashy and less expensive. but not cheap and nasty.
I do have the requirement that i have to get a larger model, as i have to regularly wash blankets (woolen, duvet inners etc) for my son who suffers excema.

656797 2008-04-07 07:51:00 We just replaced our 10 year old Washing Machine January, we got a Simpson EZIset 750 ( 7.5 Kg), This one here (www.bondandbond.co.nz) The better half washes the duvet, and always has it full when washing general clothes every weekend ( 3-4 loads) and once during the week - seems OK. (how we get so many clothes is beyond me)

Mind you - don't you have a rep for blowing up things electrical :D Only kidding.

656798 2008-04-07 08:48:00 I think that is the machine / brand my parents have, and they have had 4 of them new in the last 15 months . . . . . . . . . . . . they not had much with any of them, even when new .

admittedly one was damaged when delivered and unpacked, and had a huge dent in it . but the other 3 have had major faults like not bolted together, rattled parts off at time of first use . leaking and i mean major leaking, and then just not working at all .

but they cant all be that bad can they? :p

656799 2008-04-07 09:33:00 Whatever you do, don't buy a whirlpool. Great at washing, but noisy! And shakes something chronic. pine-o-cleen (2955)
656800 2008-04-07 09:45:00 Ours has been fine, even with me having to wrestle it into and out of the back of my station wagon ( only just fitted) , the only problem we have had so far was 1 water leak - mind you can't blame the machine for that - it was where the hose connected to the connections under the wash tub, I didn't tighten it properly - OOPS!:o

You mention rattles - ours is fine, no more noisier than any other, and only vibrates if you load it incorrectly, like all the heavy clothes to one side.

656801 2008-04-07 10:04:00 I have Fisher and Paykel and find it good.
Or at least swmbo hasn't said otherwise.

656802 2008-04-07 22:02:00 I bought a Hoover last time. With a rotary dial, no touch buttons. It doesn't completely eliminate the electronics but it cuts it down enormously.

And its been going just fine for 5 years so far.

656803 2008-04-08 09:41:00 As much as I dislike F&P products they are the easiest to get parts for.

We have and have had Smeg, ASKO, Bosch, AEG and a couple of other overseas brands of whiteware here and they are expensive to replace parts and sometimes we have had to wait a while for them.

In saying that the AEG washing machine has been the most reliable of all out whiteware.

We ran away from home in 1992 and left the daughters in our house with our F&P crapmachine. In our temporary premises until the girls got sorted and we sold the house 2 years later, we bought a simple Hoover Commodore top loading non bells and whistles machine. When we sold the house, we got the F&P back, but decided to sell it because it didn't fit into the space in our new 1920's bungalow.

That Hoover is still going happily 15 years or so later, with no repairs necessary in the meantime. It sounds as though it is going into a terminal fit when the brakes come on, but it has always done that. Noisy solenoids or brakes. I bet the F&P died years ago, judging by the poor performance of the previous models we had (briefly before they died). The Hoover is one of the best buys we ever made...
