798284 2009-08-05 05:47:00 Bought the Seagate yesterday to back up our work data... but am getting error messages. Could this be an incompatibility issue? On Windows XP SP2. (I think I need to retire..) Please help! gogranny (15148)
798285 2009-08-05 05:52:00 Hi, and welcome to the Forum, can you give us more details as to what you did once you got the drive home, and what error messages are you getting? ronyville (10611)
798286 2009-08-05 06:04:00 It's recognised as external F Drive... can manually copy, i.e. a word document, but am getting an exclamation inside a yellow circle. Can't use either Norton Backup or Nero Backup... same exclamation. Sorry, will have another go at copying to get the exact message. gogranny (15148)
798287 2009-08-05 06:10:00 Error message: !Error occurred while compresssing file. !Verification for file failed. X Data Verification failed. gogranny (15148)
798288 2009-08-05 06:34:00 Thought I'd give things a rest and reboot....Windows then farewelled me with "F:\$Mft". It told me that it was unable to save the info and could I please save it somewhere else... gogranny (15148)
798289 2009-08-05 06:55:00 Have you tried it on an sp3 computer gary67 (56)
798290 2009-08-05 07:14:00 No - will try it on the laptop - thanks for your help.

I have been to the Seagate site and read the error messages there. Eyes glazed over! There is a 'hotfix' there with a dire warning that if you don't know what you're doing and install it, you could muck things up considerably.

798291 2009-08-05 07:43:00 can manually copy, but am getting an exclamation inside a yellow circle. Can't use either Norton Backup or Nero Backup... same exclamation.

Make sure WIndows sees it happily before attempting any copying.

Use Syncback Free.
Or manually copy stuff over.

If it still plays up, reformat it and try again.

If it persists reagrdless of copying method, send it backup.

And dump Nortons.

798292 2009-08-05 08:08:00 What is the exact model number of the HD. Could be one of the affected drives with the firmware issue.

Try running those backup programs as admin

Right Click>Run as admin

798293 2009-08-05 08:32:00 Try updating XP to SP3 first.

MFT stands for Master File Table is the place where information about every file and directory on an NTFS volume is stored.

This may have corrupted perhaps if you've bumped the drive while it's being written to, or if you've filled the drive to capacity (see the last paragraph in above webpage) possibly causing your problem.
As said earlier you may need to reformat the drive.
Another thought, are you sure you're actually writing to the external drive when using backup or file copying 'non-manually' (may be defaulting to your cd drive, which wont work if it's not a 'burner), recheck your drive letter allocation in My Computer.
Another thing, why are the files being compressed to the drive (shouldnt be necessary unless you are trying to fit huge files (e.g. Operating System backup images etc)); is the ext drive formatted in FAT32 file system (maximum single file size is 4GB, max drive size recognised is 127GB), no such prob in NTFS.
