2009-08-04 22:40:00 | Recently changed my old DSE router to a Linksys AG310, but now my internet (xnet) stops working randomly, but with some oddities. If I look at my DSL status the connection with the ISP is till on and I still have my external IP address. Basically PPPoA is UP. All computers on the network will not be able to load any websites, RSS feeds die, etc... BUT: Skype is still connected and calls and be made and received, MSN still logged on. Also I have elevated my router on four small blocks of wood, to give it better ventilation just in case this is a heat problem, but did not help. Any comments or things I should try? Thanks

2009-08-04 23:15:00 | Could it be DNS servers down? Try using OpenDNS servers and see what happens. 208.67.222.222 208.67.220.220 Blam

2009-08-04 23:27:00 | Xnet's DNS server's arent down, coz I'm using them. What about firewalls. Are the other PC's wired or wireless? | Speedy Gonzales (78) | |
2009-08-04 23:44:00 | Main desktop computers are wired, only notebooks are on wireless. Both wired and wireless have the same problem. I was guessing DNS problem too, but the only thing I've changed is my router so I was assuming the new hardware is causing some problems. Also can Skype/MSN work without DNS being correct? I've now set the DNS manually on my XP desktop machine to 58.28.4.2 and 58.28.6.2. See if that helps. Before I had them set to my router's address assuming that it should provide me with the correct address. Funny how my router reports xnet's DNS being 58.28.5.2 and 58.28.6.2 while xnet's website states 58.28.4.2 and 58.28.6.2

2009-08-05 03:08:00 | We had the same problem with Xnet, even when using OpenDNS. Long story short, we had to leave them. Problem got worse and worse. As soon as we switched ISPs, just changed the username in the router (Nothing else needed) and immediately we had better speeds and the problems were all gone. Don't hold your breath, and don't expect their helpdesk to be of any use either :-/ Once MSN / Skype are connected they don't use DNS (as much at least), as they're generally communicating directly with another endpoint that they know the IP address of, and so they don't have to constantly resolve names :)

2009-08-05 04:17:00 | We've been having a couple of odd issues the last few weeks on Orcon, DNS related, not too suire if it's something here or at Orcon's end, but putting in the DNS manually seems to fix the problem. | wratterus (105) | |
2009-08-05 05:27:00 | Been having identical problems with be dropped too Heni, although my ISP is Ihug(Vodafone). They were useless in trying to help cure the problem. I was being dropped several times (4+) a day for quite some time. now it is down to about once a day. Go figure :) | smurf (6545) | |
2009-08-05 13:02:00 | Had problem last night, and the previous night before that too. I think the past two mornings I woke up with a broken internet after a night's sleep. However today has been fine... on all computers including the ones where I did not manually set the DNS. Maybe the new hardware finally made itself comfortable after moving into my house~ Firmware on my AG310 had been updated to the newest version already. Overall I'm just a bit surprised that a branded new Linksys router had trouble staying connected to the internet while my old old random DSE router worked fine. Let's hope my new router will still be connected after I wake up in the morning...
