798164 2009-08-04 22:03:00 Hi Guys,

I've received a call from a friend that wants me to check out her Mac computer. She said it pops up with a fake "anti virus scan", takes about 20 seconds and detects 49 viruses. I've only used a Mac a few times. Can Mac's get infected with spyware? :illogical

Cheers.

Scan it with iAntivirus.

798166 2009-08-04 22:16:00 It's most likely a webpage popup... Erayd (23)
798167 2009-08-04 23:08:00 No Spyware or Viruses in the wild for OSX Macs.
Only a Couple of Trojans attached to stolen software and Pron codex. User needs to enter password to install either.

Probably a Webpage popup: which will mention a registry which Macs do not have.
Macs also have EFI not BIOS..

798169 2009-08-04 23:46:00 in the last year or so we have had quite a few macs come in absolutley RIDDLED with spyware and viruses - our boss used to be a firm beliver that this simply was not possible now beleive otherwise after his mac fell prey to it

a few years back an infection on a mac was nothing but lies and hearsay but now the tables have certainly turned

macs are now very popular and "cool" and yuppies absolutley love them to show off to other people - trouble is they completley buy into the now myth that macs are super safe and immune to such things and proceed to click on every viagra spam email and bend over to scams asking for passwords ect

"but it cant get viruses! - its a mac!" simply doesnt cut it anymore - since they are so popular now crooks are beginning to see the macintosh as a very juicy tidbit to throw their wares at and hope some naive person clicks on their rouge ad saying they have 999999 viruses and need to pay $99 to some dodgy company for it to go away

so yes - from my experience i see that macs are just as easily infected as PC's are and maybe even more so due to the owners belief that macs cant get infected - its simply not the case these days

Surprised at you for bringing this up again as it has been done to death on previous posts.

It is a Trojan not a virus and as Sue mentioned it comes from pirated downloads or fake codecs on certain unsavoury sites.

I wouldn't call something you have to purposefully click to download, click to verify download , and then authenticate by password to install before it operates as any great threat. It would be hard to even call it malware! There is no way to accidentally initiate this program.

798171 2009-08-05 01:10:00 While MAC's may not YET get viruses - just take a look at MAC_H8ER's post -- I spose its all made up and only one on the planet.

A few months back I was talking to one of the Local MAC repair Places here in WGTN, trying to help out a person who called me to fix a VERY SLOW and bug filled MAC - the repair business confirmed they are getting many MAC's in with infections.

If people want to keep their heads in the sand and think " it wont happen because I have a MAC" Blimey - are they in for a shock.

RIDDLED with spyware and viruses you say.
Can't believe that for a moment, think you might be letting your bias affect your reasoning.
As there are no active viruses in the wild that affect macs your comments are a bit emotive.
Sure macs can get a virus but they don't have any effect on the mac itself as it can't be activated and the only problem is if the mac is also running Windows or that it might be passed onto another PC.
