657986 2008-04-12 02:07:00 They can charge whatever they like - they're a private company. Just like the dairy down the road can charge you $10 for a bottle of milk if they want.

They can to a point, but if they are overcharging NZers compared to what they are charging US customers, then NZers should be aware of this.

I guess it is like the NZ milk companies selling their milk to NZers cheaper than what they sell it for to the rest of the world, which they don't do. The rest of the world would begin asking questions as to why NZ is getting it so much cheaper.

657987 2008-04-12 02:39:00 Interesting. I guess we are a very profitable market to them on a margin basis, and perhaps that is why they do so much advertsing here.

Well in theory if you market a product heavily it will sell well, the catch to that is that you also need to have a good profit margin on a product and have it continue to sell well after it has been marketed to be a success.....there in lies the problem for Dell. Extensive and expensive marketing for run of the mill products that results in high volume low profit sales and missed budget forecasts - thus resulting in staff layoffs.

If people don't buy from them, then they will get the message .

If NZ'ers don't do their research then its their fault . They can look at other manufacturers AND we have Pricespy for them to make a valid comparison . If they don't and then they complain, well then they deserved to get ripped off .

As long as they know that Pricespy exists and how to use it. The majority seem to prefer the convenience of buying from a "reputable" brand box manufacturer.

657994 2008-04-12 05:12:00 I'm sure you realise the NZ market can't compare to the US market, they've probably got some distribution efficiencies in place in the States that can account for a good chunk of cheapness. sal (67)

They used to manufacture in the Big Rock area of Texas (Micky Dell's home turf) but are moving their stuff over to Asia or Poland where it is way cheaper - that was part of Dells problem regarding reducing manufacturing costs - so Dell still has to ship their stuff from China to the mainland US or NZ (depending on where the customer lives). Of course 4.1 million people doesn't really compete with 350 Million+
