656669 2008-04-07 04:26:00 I can get better speeds & max out my line semi-regularly (800KBps +) using multi-threaded downloading from certain Aussie ISPs etc...

Speeds not the issue, if people are downloading at 1-200KBps then thats generally more than fast enough for everybody

Id rather see "Which offers best bang-for-buck in terms of dollar vs speed vs data cap", coz I care little about speed and more about a higher data cap.

Lets face it, people mostly browse, so anything over 2m/bit is usually just a waste... You can stream video QUITE happily on a connection of that speed :)

656671 2008-04-07 05:18:00 According to speedtest, Mastervegas has the fastest speeds in NZ, at over 4000kBps, which is a very good speed. robbyp (2751)
656672 2008-04-07 06:02:00 As per the poll question, I voted for Orcon but not because of the thread title . What is recommended and what is the fastest don't really mix .

I got Orcon because there was no need to sign contracts, no connection fee, no need to transfer the telephone bill to your ISP, no need to spend a min amount on toll charges . There was no data charges, ie . , you pick the plan and pay for the GBs that you used .

What you use, is what you pay . No mind games with a fair use policy .

I won't call Orcon the fastest or any other ISP for that matter . I was originally getting only under 2Mbit so I have downgraded to a 256/128 plan . 2Mbit is really not too bad but I felt I should not pay that . With a 2Mbit connection, video streaming was perfectly fine, for most downloads it was fine . Most of my internet is surfing webpages and email so the slower speed is fine .

Question:
Isn't Orcon the same as World Exchange?

Interestingly, that was to the Napier or Auckland servers. My "local" in Wellington (Citylink) was utter crap at 750/98 with 257ms ping, vs about 40-50ms at the others.

I am one block away from the Telstra cable . :crying

At the time, if I could get it and I could get a decent speed (location wise), I would of opted for the $50 or such package without the telephone line hire .

Now I am not sure because 2Mbit appears fast enough for what I do and its cheaper and I don't need the full 10GB . Plans are such that, if you don't use all the 10GB they just reset it at the end of month .

Second that, the local connection, and I'm on Telstra cable, is crap, going to napier was faster, Auckland even faster still but the speed tests mean nothing, according to that test I'm downloading at just under 3000 with an upload of 7524 - Yeah right ( and yes that is round the right way) Must be a head wind today
