657836 2008-04-10 20:11:00 It's amazing that any time a company tries to improve infrastructure, whether it's building wind turbines, or in this case, shortening the local loop, people will moan and groan about it. www.nzherald.co.nz somebody (208)
657837 2008-04-10 20:49:00 It's not amazing at all. Many of the early Post Office exchanges were designed to look just like the houses in the neighbourhood so they didn't stand out. Do you want the cabinets to be an eyesore? IIRC the original plans included more cabinets even closer to the people they served which would have meant that they would be smaller. PaulD (232)

Because 40% of the space has to be available for competitors to co-locate their DSLAM/ISAM equipment.

Its NZs NIMBY syndrome. They are large due to the governments unbundling policies, and the requirement for other isps to install their own equipment in them. I guess you could call this another negative result of unbundling.

PS. It is not as fugly as the thick telstra cables that line the streets in Wellingstion and it's suburbs. At least telecom put their new cables underground.

Such a petty issue.
