657161 2008-04-08 11:56:00 Ok you very helpful people. My son turns 13 in a few days and I'd like to get him an MP3 player. I don't want to spend a lot because likely as not, he'll lose it, or someone at school will pinch it but I can only hope.... So - I know nothing about such things but am biased against Apple ever since my business partners' daughter innocently downloaded iTunes at work and it converted every piece of music in sight to MP4!! But I have a semi-open mind. What do you reckon? I think an FM radio included is nice but not essential. Winston001 (3612)
657162 2008-04-08 12:17:00 In apple's defense itunes only did what it was told to. Both my sons have a shuffle (www.dse.co.nz) and they haven't destroyed them yet. But you will be stuck using itunes or the program speedy uses
What is your price range?

A 1 Gig player for around $30 or so.

Cheap and at times dodgy (Don't press hard on the display panel). But it plays mp3, wav, wmv, OGG (WOOO!)
Has a radio I think and runs on AAA's.

Yup, it does have a radio function. On top of that, you can use it as a voice recorder (though keep your fingers crossed on this!). $30 package gives you the mp3 player, earphones and a AAA battery.

Cheers :)

657165 2008-04-09 06:47:00 I have a DSE MP3 player, and there's nothing wrong with it. It runs on a single AAA battery and I got a 1GB version for $50. :)

The blue one (which I have) also has an FM radio.

657166 2008-04-09 09:48:00 Just brought this for my wife: www.dse.co.nz

Looked at the $30 ones, but she didn't want to mess around with batteries all the time, so this was the next choice.

Good mp3 player and has one cool feature, you press a button on the side and a USB connector flicks out, no need for cables.

OLED display, good sound, good menu system.

I guess it just depends how much you want to spend.

657167 2008-04-09 11:25:00 Samsung make some very nice ones.

For my money, I got a 4Gb touch player with FM and Video capabilities for $180 or so. Works like a charm and you wont believe how good the screen is and the overall weight!

657168 2008-04-10 00:26:00 Thanks for all of your help, good advice and selection. I'm inclined to get a cheapie to see how he likes it and upgrade in due course.

Not quite sure what you mean about batteries Pine-o-clean, don't they all use batteries?

The one he quoted uses (like the Ipod) a battery that you don't remove .

657170 2008-04-10 00:39:00 Well you can replace Ipod batteries.

Prob is the wires on them are crappy, and can break easily. If youre not careful.
