| 658718 | 2008-04-14 10:58:00 | Greetings folks, Time to start a fresh, The last thread is nearly a year old, and we know how fast time goes in the world of PC's. As before the aim is to outline a realistically priced and capable home PC, The rest is open ended, or just ask some questions, list the system you intend to buy, whatever. So, What has changed since the last thread? DX10 video cards are mainstream, and seemingly cheap and powerful. Vista is nearly unavoidable, And still a bloated resource hog, Though it seems it has some quite fanatical fans about.... AMD has bought ATI, and now seems to be in big trouble, with huge losses, delayed and missing products, and flagship products from both companies failing to match the performance of their rivals products. On the plus side you can buy a dual core AMD cpu, 1 GB ram, and a good motherboard for just over $200, Forming the basis for an awesome, cheap PC, Unless you ruin it with Vista. 22" LCD's can be had for under $300, and DVD burners for $30 Elsewhere Linux is just getting better and better, and Apple continue with the wank factor but are still a highly desirable platform for many people.:D Dell are losing money.....Woohoo.Die die die. |

Plus I thought you were happy with the way your new HP laptop runs. Meh, I have bumped her up to 2GB, stripped her down for efficiency, and my FTP program takes so long to open (probably 6 seconds) that I bang the icon multiple times until all of a sudden i have the program opening 5 or 6 times. I have said in the past I don't care what OS I use as long as it doesn't get in my way, To me, Thats getting in my way, There is no reason for a program with such a tiny footprint to be taking that long to launch while running on hardware that is capable of running 100's of instances of that software. I pay the money, I expect crap to happen with no delay. |

Intel have it all over AMD, and I can't see AMD coming back. |

Lets face it, most of us are cheap (I certainly am) and would rather buy a slightly slower CPU and upgrade something else that *isnt* the bottleneck of the system, such as a bigger HDD, more RAM or a Graphics Card. As before the aim is to outline a realistically priced and capable home PC, The rest is open ended... Besides, the proof that we're all a bunch of frugal scrooges is in the latest craze of UMPC's that are being devoured by international markets. The EeePC was one of Amazon.com's biggest Christmas sellers in the IT division! Why was it so sought after? It wasnt because it has a whopping big HDD, Im tellin you ;) |
