For all that, we are supposed to get a warm feeling for helping our yellow-skinned brethren. Chinese is probably all that those who still have a mortgage can afford. Make the most of it while the Chinese are subsidising the US market. Who'd want to be President and inherit G W's credit card bills? |

| 659955 | 2008-04-27 00:16:00 | I just bumped onto a google search b/c in the past I had worked in a call centre which I disliked. I read a article that Westpac call centre has a 60% turnover rate. All of this isn't cos of any trade agreements, its just a strategic direction. Money is never enough, its about excellence amounts of it. They compete not just for today but down the road. Yeah .. going overseas cos cheaper and if it cost to NZ workers in their mind so be it ... Also another reason can be that to get away from a country's labour issues or unions etc. Some yrs ago, after working in a call centre (helpdesk), the pay was low, the turnover was high and all our calls are monitored or bugged, we are told how many calls we had, how long was the duration of each, when a call was like 5mins or more a manager or team leader will come over to me and ask what's going on. They know, when we logged onto the telephones, so they know are we on time to work, on time after lunch etc., how long for toilet breaks etc.. and if it was unreasonable we get our pay deducted, each week we had to be audited and signed off before we are paid. In the morning we would sign onto my phones and there is a button to press if we have work to do .. like processing etc., in the morning before the call centre is opened the manager or team leader will yell out .. hey "Paul" get out of inactive. If we had a fire evacuation, we are queued up with callers, the managers put the whole team into a frenzy psyching them up to get as many calls as possible. By putting helpdesk callcentre / processing jobs overseas is a strategic choice. Because in developed nations its a $$ labour, high turnover. It tends to be that they expect high turnover and they will just finance training every 3 or 6 months and expect people to leave. After reading what they do in USA or Canada is that, some call centres may be located in poorer remote places so desperate people stay with them longer - like navy wives and college students. By going to poorer countries it may sound crude but they can take advantage of their workers. Call centre jobs are via shift work, that is each 2nd week you are provided diff times, for eg. 7am - 3pm or 9am - 5pm or 11am - 7pm etc. Some will be start in the evening and finish 4am in the morning - depends on the type of organisation. That might be over the peak period, hence they employ people on temping contracts or fixed term contracts. End of that they just end the contract with 2 weeks notice. The contracts tend not be on the companies own payroll but via a recruitment agency so you are a contractor and not as a "employee" so you lose out all those perks. I think if you are contractor you may not belong to a union and you lose things like training allowance, life insurance, superannuation etc. Contractors may be paid $2 more per hour but if a permanent jobs is avilable and you apply for it and get it, the pay is deducted $2 per hour even thou we are experienced. So people tend to say its less pay but more job security. In India I read that a college student got a part time job with a call centre job and he had to pass a accent test. I think in 2004 or something I applied to Singapore randomly .. more adv than NZ .. but for those jobs they only pay you $16,000-17,000 SGD that might be around $20,000-23,000NZ before tax if my maths are right ... I find that in NZ the wages to be a bit more fairer, some of the places which are more developed and high standards of living have a wide spread of low and high incomes and its legal to pay them that way. Overall avg may be higher than NZ (cos of numbers) but numbers can be confusing. |

I feel very sorry for the employees, and annoyed that Labour is doing nothing to help business's and indeed everything to make it harder for them. Lets see if world comes to an end,I know old Terry thinks it will. Like he did when all other good reforms came in. |
