659078 2008-04-16 02:53:00 Everyone seems to conveniently overlook the fact we already spend taxpayer money on sport - elite sport in fact. I remind you of the $36 million the Government put into the America's Cup campaign - and the races weren't even held in New Zealand.

To allow say, 100 top rugby players a tax break is pennyante by comparison.

Their playing is also pennyante a lot of the time, so it seems fair to apply the same rules to the taxbreak.

What because they lost the world cup that they were supose to? They lost ONE game?

659081 2008-04-16 03:13:00 I'm not saying don't spend money on them. Just tax breaks aren't the answer to anything. I'm not saying they're not worth the money either. It's just the wrong answer to the question. Thebananamonkey (7741)
659082 2008-04-16 05:40:00 Surely there are better people the government could give tax breaks to to keep in NZ??
Doctors, teachers etc etc

I agree. Whats with the fuss over people who make stories for a living and bash balls around paddocks?

Totally useful for keeping the planet going.....not.

One game is sometimes all it takes. England became the world champions because of just one kick, even though they weren't nessessarily a better team than Australia. There is a lot of luck in it, and often it comes down to the bounce of the ball and timing.

659084 2008-04-16 06:39:00 I couldn't give a crap if they won everygame - the answer is still no. Scouse (83)
659085 2008-04-16 07:02:00 We endeavour to stick to the principal, that sports do not get tax breaks, that's all sport.

Watching the feeling generally about this question I note that about 2% are in favour.

So for once the majority got it right.

659086 2008-04-16 08:12:00 Let them go, who cares.

If they get a tax break i'm going to burn down the IRD.

Not that they will, Its all a load of dribble.
I totally agree with you Metla.

Hang on - what about the tens of millions spent on the Americas Cup - by the taxpayer? Much of it ending up overseas. Its inconsistent to fund a minor sport and ignore a major one.
