658748 2008-05-27 23:51:00 Why buy a AMD?

We know Intel is far far better :D

from a previous post
"AMD's fastest dual core would be the 6400+, which would be comparable to an E6600-E6700"

from pricespy
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 29 prices $320 . 68
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ 72 prices $215 . 49

$100 bucks buys alot of ram if you are on a budget, or would be better spent
on a higher spec vid card .

Not that you need the speed of either CPU unless you play games or
run CAD/grahics software etc
Ram & HD etc speed (lack of speed) will be a big factor in total system performance, so a faster CPU wont allways make a noticable difference
"PC3-6400 (DDR3-800 SDRAM); Clock Speed: 100MHz, Data Rate: 800MHz, Throughput 6 . 40GB/s"
"PC2-6400 (DDR2-800 SDRAM); Clock Speed: 200MHz, Data Rate: 800MHz, Throughput 6400MB/s"

658749 2008-05-29 04:34:00 OK, I have a question . Something that I was wondering is if you have 4 ram slots on your motherboard, which would be faster?

2 x 2Gb RAM modules OR 4 x 1GB modules?

Or wouldn't it make a shed of difference?

Cheers,

Vic . :nerd:

658750 2008-05-29 05:16:00 2x 2GB is preferred over 4x 1GB, not sure if there's any speed difference, but 2 x 2GB will have better stability. EviLClouD (12981)

Technically 4 x 1 GB would be faster, as you have twice the memory bandwidth, but you aren't gonna notice the difference. :)

2x 2GB is probably cheaper too.

658752 2008-08-20 01:58:00 I'm building an AMD at the mo (because these systems are pretty old now).

Just in case one of these die, and there's probably no parts for them left! (P4's)

And just to see how it will run.

I've got this case (www.gigabyte.com.tw)

Only got this case, since it comes with firewire at the front. And the front panel supports HD / or AC97. Since the mobo (www.asus.com) has FW onboard and you've got the option of HD or AC97 sound.

Havent figured out yet whether I'll put 4 or 8 GB of ram in. But I might put 8 GB in (about $62 for 2 GB DDR2 800), and install Server 2008 on it, and convert it to a workstation.

Havent decided what kind of CPU yet (probably an AM2+ might get a Quad, with the rebate that's coming for the power next mth / Oct)

Then chuck something like this (www.modster-pc.co.nz:80)

Or this in a bay (www.modster-pc.co.nz:80)

The connections get plugged into the back of the case

658753 2008-09-22 22:26:00 Where are you buying your RAM from? Sounds pretty cheap. I am building an AMD based system because it's cheaper than Intel. I read that AMD processors of slower clock speeds than Intel can rival faster Intel processors. Perhaps this is outdated? sammo450 (13626)
658754 2008-09-23 23:13:00 coooool. (www.shop0594.com/). (http:). (www.guitareffectpedal.info/). (http:). (http://www.m591.com/)

WTF???

Really random, hard to access spam?

I decided to get it down the road (the ram for about $73 for 2 GB).

In the end I got a 5000 (the shop didnt have triple core or the 6000+).

And I couldnt be stuffed going to different places, trying to find something else

Got the system running last week (AM2 5000+, 2 GB transcend ram, will probably get more later, 250 GB hdd, 460W Gigabyte PSU (since it was the cheapest), and a procase MATX case, with front firewire, USB / audio). Got all of these for $300 (not inc the CPU). The shop gave me a bit of a discount.

The other shop is in Newmarket (http://www.xpcomputers.co.nz/)

Some of the prices here arent too bad

I think it depends on how much ram you use, and also what version of Windows (32 bit 64), you use, on how fast things go too as well.

I only made another system up, so I could give the flatmate the PC I was using. As hers kept on crashing no matter what version of the video card drivers were installed. And that mobo is going in the bin

And I'll be using the PSU case etc it had for a 754 pin mobo I've had for a few yrs, but never used (I never had a CPU for it till now). As a spare PC

Now, I've got 3 spare P4 CPU's lol. A 400, and 2 533 FSB CPU's doing nothing, but looking at each other in the drawer.

658756 2008-09-24 00:30:00 I see you mention tri-core cpus there. Do you think they are any good? It sounds sort of odd having three cores as computers generally do things in twos. sammo450 (13626)
658757 2008-09-24 00:47:00 Dont know, how good the tri cores are .

Well they do have Quads as well for AMD . I wouldn't really bother unless the programs youre using can use them (I would say not a lot of programs can right now) .

And the latest chip is now 6500+ (not 6400) . The latest version of the BIOS for this mobo supoports 6500, so they're around somewhere
